You might know us already
We've been working in Christchurch and North Canterbury since 1977, initially as the Adult Reading Assistance Scheme, and, since 2016, as Literacy Christchurch. As things change, we like to keep the best and update the rest. We're proud of being local and committed to supporting locals and their communities - old and new - with access to essential learning: Whet

her you’ve been around Ōtautahi forever or just arrived, or anything in between, if you live, work, or study locally, we're here to help you access quality essential learning. It includes reading, writing, listening and speaking, language, maths and numeracy, academic skills, vocational literacy and numeracy, digital skills, critical thinking, problem solving...
It's the kind of learning we all need to reach our potential: as individuals, as whānau, as workplaces/ businesses and organisations, as communities... as a city and a region. It's great to be able to be responsive and flexible. Our programmes are as unique as the people who make up our community. We design learning pathways with people to support their learning needs and goals: Whether you are wanting a programme for yourself or for your whānau, clients, or staff, together we'll develop the skills that you need in the context that's relevant to you. And when a programme is finished, we'll help you identify the next steps in learning. We love designing new programmes with people – let us know what you need. Courses can be long or short and we do our best to have sessions at times that suit those involved. Some examples of areas we've worked in recently:
literacy and numeracy - for home, work, community NCEA literacy and numeracy Learner Licence digital literacy for job seekers introductory Te Reo Māori ESOL Learner Licence advanced report writing academic support (including for online programmes) preparation for vocational competency assessment back to work programmes preparation for psychometric testing....

We work with most ages and stages
We support learning the basics as well as working at an advanced level. We mainly work with adults but you can also contact us about working with younger people. We work with individuals and small groups - we believe in the power of kanohi ki te kanohi - face-to-face learning. Our educators are awesome: friendly, professional, qualified, experienced, talented, think outside the box, go the extra mile kind of people. Programmes are free or reasonably priced - learning with us helps keep our services accessible for all:
We're a not-for-profit: funding and fees for service go back into ensuring our programmes remain accessible. If you can pay you'll be helping someone who can't. Contact us if you'd like to find out more
