Each day they must take a mysterious medication to protect themselves from an illness. Those who survive are allowed to move to the Big House in Margate, a mythical destination desired by every child.

With a new week, welcomes a new non-fiction title. Bloody Minded: War, womanhood and finding my voice by Susie Ferguson is a powerful memoir of womanhood and all that it encompasses.

In the beginning of her radio career, Susie was the only woman among hundreds of men to become a war correspondent. Yet amid all the bloody-minded grit, nothing could’ve prepared her for the deeper betrayals of womanhood. From waiting years for surgery, to ‘wasting’ doctors time, being faced with violence in countries of war, and navigating the transition from a high-powered career to a mother, Susie lays bare the reality women are forced to navigate. With the weekend quickly approaching, it’s a perfect time to check out our new additions to the catalogue! The Scent of Oranges retells the literature favourite of Oliver Twist through Nancy’s eyes.

From the dark streets of Victorian London, Nancy has endured hardship, danger and heartbreak—but even throughout the grime she uncovers beauty, even if it’s in the form of something as simple as an orange. When love and a lost orphan enter her life, redemption feels within a close reach. This is a captivating story of love, sacrifice, and the fight between light and darkness. Our KUR 001 bookclub recently hit the 30 year mark! As a celebration some past original members and present members met up for a wonderful weekend at Rangitata Rafting Lodge.

A message from KUR 001 - We all had a shared love of books and had a fabulous time. So lovely for Petra Stangl, who is the only original member that is still part of the KUR 001 group. Our Bookclub group covers a side area in the Waitaki region - with an hour's distance between some of our members. We enjoy getting together and will plan other trips away. Thank you BDS for helping us to connect over books.
