is a ceramicist and maker who found her way to pottery from a need to create something tactile and find a practice that was mindful and meditative.

Her work reflects everyday moments, made special with the use of handmade ceramics. Each piece she creates is a blend of functionality and artistry, inviting a connection to both the tactile experience of the object and the stories it tells. She believes in the importance of community and collaboration, and thrives in an environment where she can share techniques and ideas with fellow potters. Through her ceramics, she hopes to celebrate the simplicity and elegance of everyday moments, encouraging others to find beauty in their everyday.

studied painting and sculpture in Sydney and has an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts. Moving back to New Zealand in 2003 and joining the MCP a few years later, starting a new art practice working in clay. She enjoys making functional objects as well as sculptural works. Glazes and underpainting are an important part of her process incorporating design, pattern, colour and texture to complete the work.

✨Maker Spotlight - Nicci Neilson ✨

Nicola (Nicci) Neilson, hailing from England, completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Canterbury Kent (UK) in 1996, earning a BA in Fine Art. Following her graduation, Nicola embarked on a decade-long journey, traversing the globe and painting vibrant, expressive landscapes inspired by her adventures. Her works found homes in various galleries and were acquired by esteemed institutions such as BBC London and Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.

In 2005, Nicci made New Zealand her home and continued her artistic pursuits from a studio space in Waitohi Picton, all while nurturing her family and sharing her passion for art through teaching at primary schools. In recent times, Nicci has delved into the world of ceramics, inspired by a serendipitous encounter with a local ceramicist. This new medium resonated with Nicci's organic approach to design, prompting her to explore its creative possibilities further.

✨ Maker Spotlight - Sharon Hill ✨

has been a potter for around 10 years and loves the tactile nature and quiet peace of hand making pottery without a wheel. She uses a combination of pinching, coiling and slabwork - fully exploring texture and decoration once forms are created.

She has her own studio and workshop space on a rural property near Blenheim specialising in handmade tableware, along with more sculptural vases and wallhangings.

Using mainly stoneware clay for its pliability and structure, Sharon takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape using earthy blues, greens, greys, whites and blacks in her work, with the occasional pop of yellow.

Known to frequently work late into the night and get up well before the birds to pot in her studio with a great audio book on, she loves nothing more than to talk pottery with those similarly obsessed – whether fellow makers or appreciative collectors.

✨Maker Spotlight - Sara Scott✨

came to Marlborough at the end of 2004 and settled with her family on a lifestyle block in Picton. She trained at Central Saint Martin’s Art School (London) in the 1970’s and had done very little potting since, so arrived with no kiln and no knowledge of local materials. She was welcomed at MCP immediately and made to feel at home by the committee of four. MCP’s membership stood at about 30 in those days. Sara joined the committee, eventually becoming President and has ever since felt grateful for the existence of the club, even though she has her own kiln, studio and gallery now. The friendship and generosity of the members is staggering and, in order to keep in touch with her potting friends and colleagues, she provides clay from Decopot for students and professionals to use, with a small profit going to the club. New clubrooms have been on the agenda for the last 20 years or more, so she is very keen to see it finally happen.

✨Maker Spotlight - Simon Kennedy ✨

has been dabbling in ceramics for 20 years or so, initially as a sculptural medium when completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts. Later, a move to live in Japan for several years led Simon towards making functional tableware. Simon's recent work is either thrown on the wheel or hand-built and sometimes a combination of the two. Simon’s work is often influenced by time spent tramping and exploring local rivers and mountains. He particularly enjoys developing his own glazes and likes to explore form and texture with an aim to balance expressive looseness with technical restraint. He has been a member of MCP since around 2018 and has enjoyed their support and community.

✨Maker Spotlight - Vicki Hawkins ✨

With the much anticipated launch of our Patrons' Collection, we thought we would share a bit about our makers who have generously given their time and creativity to our cause.

is a Marlborough based artist whose creative journey began with painting and paper-pulp sculpture before leading her into clay. Holding a Diploma in Visual Arts and Design, she rediscovered pottery after a long break and was immediately captivated by its endless creative possibilities.

Working primarily in stoneware, Vicki mainly creates functional ceramics characterised by simple forms, tactile surfaces, and handmade glazes inspired by the natural world. Her pieces are designed for everyday use, celebrating the beauty and individuality of handmade objects.

🏺 The Patrons’ Collection 🏺

A collaboration of 18 local artists have come together and generously donated exceptional works from their personal collections to be tendered with all proceeds going to our New Clubrooms project. Each piece reflects the skill, creativity, and passion that exists within our pottery community and will directly make a huge impact on the expansion of ceramics in Marlborough.

The collection will be available to view Thomas’s Marlborough | Premier Department Store NZ from the 31st of August until the 7th of September and available to view online now via our website.

Over the next few weeks we will be highlighting the artists here on our social media so make sure you head over to their pages to have a look at their incredible work too
