🇫🇯 MACAWA NI VOSA VAKAVITI – FIJIAN LANGUAGE WEEK 🇫🇯
4–10 October 2026
“Na noqu vosa me tekivu mai vale ka me'u na vosataka e na veisiga.”
My language starts at home, and I need to speak it every day.
This week, we celebrate more than just the Fijian language. We celebrate who we are, where we come from, and what we pass on to our children.
Our language begins at home, in the conversations around the dinner table, the stories from our grandparents, the prayers we share, the songs we sing, and the simple words we use every day. When we speak our language with our children, we give them a connection to their culture, identity, and roots.
And this message is for all our Pacific brothers and sisters too. Whether you speak Fijian, Samoan, Tongan, Rotuman, Māori, Tuvaluan, Kiribati, Bislama, or any other Pacific language, speak it at home and teach it to the next generation.
Our languages are treasures. They carry our stories, our ancestors, our values, and our way of life.
The Pacific Ocean may be vast, but it has never truly separated us. It has connected our islands for generations. We are ocean people, and our voices can travel across that ocean, from one island to another, from one family to another, and from one generation to the next.
As we celebrate Fiji's 56th year of Independence on 10 October, let us also celebrate the freedom to be proud of who we are, to speak our language, and to keep our culture alive.
🇫🇯 From our homes, let our language grow.
From Fiji, let our voice travel across the Pacific.
Speak it. Teach it. Live it. Pass it on.
Me bula tiko ga na Vosa Vakaviti.
Me bula tiko ga o Viti.
🇫🇯 Happy Fijian Language Week & Happy 56th Independence Day, Fiji!
One Ocean. Many Islands. One Pacific Family. ❤️

WOMEN IN TRADES – BLENHEIM

Are you a woman considering a career in the trades, or simply curious about what it could look like?

BCITO is hosting a Women in Trade, Tools and Talk Evening in Blenheim, and it’s a great opportunity to hear directly from women who have already made their way into the industry.

You’ll hear from BCITO-qualified tradeswomen working across different trades, including Architectural Aluminum Joinery, Kitchen and Cabinet Joinery, and Painting and Carpentry.

They’ll share their own experiences, how they got started, what helped them get their foot in the door, and the support available through BCITO.

There will also be local BCITO women apprentices joining the evening, so you can have a relaxed chat, ask questions, and hear what the journey is really like from people who are doing it themselves.

EVENT DETAILS:

Thursday, 15 October 2026
BCITO Blenheim Office
36A Maxwell Road, Blenheim

Nibbles: 5:30pm
Event starts: 6:00pm

Spaces are very limited, so registration is essential.

To register your place, contact:
[email protected]

Please advise of any dietary requirements when registering.

If you or someone you know has been thinking about a career in the trades, this is a great chance to come along, have a chat and find out what opportunities are out there.

Please share this with your friends, whānau and anyone who might be interested.

PACIFIC FAMILY, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our Pacific way has always been about Talanoa, sharing our stories, supporting one another, and making sure our people do not walk alone.

Right now, one of our own, Loisi Ledger, is working hard to complete her research looking at the experiences of Pacific vineyard contractors in Marlborough.

SHE NEEDS OUR HELP TO FIND PARTICIPANTS.

Over the next 3 weeks, we are asking our Pacific community to please help spread the word.

If you are 18 years or older, identify as a Pacific person, and currently or have previously been recruited as a migrant worker under RSE or PAC for vineyard work in Marlborough, Loisi would love to hear from you.

The research involves a 120-minute group Talanoa, an opportunity to share your experiences, your journey, your challenges, and your perspective.

Every participant will receive a $50 voucher as a thank you for giving your time.

But more than the voucher, this is about our people.

Our stories matter.

Our experiences matter.

And when one of our own is doing research to better understand the Pacific experience here in Marlborough, we should be there to support her.

So please, don't just scroll past this post.

SHARE IT. TAG SOMEONE. SEND IT TO YOUR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY GROUPS.

Think about the vineyard contractors you know. Think about your friends, cousins, uncles, aunties and community members. Someone in your network may be exactly the person Loisi needs.

Let us show what Pacific people do best, we look after our own.

One share could reach the right person.

One introduction could help Loisi complete her research.

One person coming forward could help make our Pacific voices heard.

PACIFIC COMMUNITY, LET'S COME TOGETHER AND HELP LOISI FINISH WHAT SHE STARTED.

Contact Loisi for more information:

You can also scan the QR code on the flyer for the full participant information sheet.

Please share. Please tag. Please help.

Our people. Our stories. Our community.

Mālō e lelei!

Tongan Language Week is a time for us to celebrate, honour and strengthen Lea Faka-Tonga, the Tongan language that connects us to our culture, identity, history and heritage.

It is a reminder that our language carries the stories, values, wisdom and traditions of our people. As families and communities, let us encourage our children and young people to speak, learn and use Lea Faka-Tonga with confidence and pride.

Ko hotau lea, ko hotau tofiʻa.
Our language is our heritage.

Let us continue to treasure our language, learn from our elders, and pass it on to the next generation.

Tauhi hotau lea, tauhi hotau anga faka-Tonga. 🇹🇴❤️
Preserve our language, preserve our Tongan identity.

⚠️ Measles Alert, Please Stay Vigilant, Everyone

Kia ora, Bula, and warm Pacific greetings.

There have been confirmed cases of measles, so we're encouraging everyone in our community to stay alert and help protect one another.

Watch out for these symptoms:
🤒 Fever
😷 Cough
👃 Runny nose
👀 Red, sore eyes
🔴 A rash that usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body

If you or someone in your household has recently had these symptoms, even if you've already recovered, please call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or contact your usual healthcare provider for advice.

The best protection against measles is being fully vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. If you're unsure whether you or your children are up to date, check with your GP or medical centre.

Let's do our part to keep our families, elders, pēpi, and our wider community safe.

And remember... sharing food is caring, sharing measles is not! 😅
Let's keep the hugs, the smiles, and the laughter going, but leave the germs behind.

Please share this message to help keep our community informed. 💙

Do you still need to enrol with a GP but haven't got around to it yet? Don't worry, you’re definitely not the only one! 😊

If you live in Blenheim or anywhere in Marlborough and don't have a regular doctor, Marlborough Primary Health, Kimi Hauora Wairau can help you find a GP that's currently accepting new patients.

Getting started is easy:

📧 Email: [email protected]
Just send them your name and phone number.

They'll:
✅ Let you know which medical centres are taking new patients.
✅ Help you choose the one that suits you best.
✅ Guide you through the enrolment process from start to finish.

Prefer to talk to someone? Give them a call on 03 520 6200.

This service is FREE and confidential.

Let's be honest, we're all busy with work, church, sports, family commitments, and life in general. Sometimes we only think about finding a GP when we're already sick! 😅 Don't wait until then. Having your own doctor means you and your whānau can get the care you need when it matters most.

A little reminder: Your car gets a WOF every year... maybe it's time to give yourself a health WOF too! 😂

If you know a family member, friend, neighbor, or workmate who still needs a GP, please tag them or share this post. Looking after our health is one of the best ways we can look after each other. 💙
