Our General Manager Vijay Farley-Naiker and My Money Kete Coordinator Olive Stanley attended the launch of New Zealand’s first Debt Awareness Week hosted by DebtManagers - New research launched for New Zealand’s first Debt Awareness Week shows debt is an important enabler, but stress, shame, and silence remain widespread.

Key stats:

Debt Awareness Week runs from 23 to 29 March 2026 and around the end of March each year.

60% of New Zealanders have struggled with debt or are struggling now.

56% have a neutral or positive view of debt, including 30% who say it has helped them achieve important goals.

Among those who have struggled with debt, more than a third told no one and suffered in silence.

86% say people feel embarrassed to admit they are struggling with debt and 69% believe most people would judge someone who cannot manage their debt. DebtManagers NZ FinCap centrix Henderson Budget Service Debtfix

📊 Personal loan arrears at highest level in a decade.

A recent report in NZ Herald highlights a concerning trend: personal loan arrears have climbed to their highest level in ten years.

Data from Centrix shows arrears rising above 10%, with nearly half a million New Zealanders behind on repayments. Financial hardship cases linked to personal loans have also increased significantly year-on-year.

Behind these numbers are real households navigating:

• Higher living costs
• Persistent interest rate pressure
• Reduced financial buffers
• Greater reliance on unsecured credit

Personal loans are often the first place financial stress becomes visible. When arrears rise here, it’s a signal that many families are operating with little room to absorb shocks.

For those of us working in finance, community services, and policy, this is a reminder:

Access to fair, responsible lending matters.
Early intervention matters.
Financial capability support matters.

The focus shouldn’t just be on arrears rates, it should be on building long-term financial resilience.
