This World Homeless Day, Orange Sky stands alongside our community to acknowledge everyone navigating hardship across the motu. 🧡

We’re also proud to celebrate a major milestone of our own: 8 years of Orange Sky in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland!

Hardship is about so much more than financial strain—it’s the heavy isolation that comes with it. While free laundry and warm showers ease immediate pressure, it’s the consistent, judgment-free kōrero on the chairs that breaks isolation and builds trust.

Because trust isn’t built in a day—it’s built shift by shift.

Over 8 years in Auckland, together we’ve delivered:

💬 32,200 Hours of genuine kōrero

Orange Sky started with one hybrid van in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland 8 years ago, and today it now includes a hybrid van, 2 laundry pods and 2 internal laundries. 🌟

Seven weeks ago, we were deeply saddened to share that our van Whaea Debz had been stolen from our Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland base. Thanks to the swift work of the New Zealand Police, our van was safely recovered just days later, however had significant damage that required repair.

Since then, your generous support has allowed our workshop team to restore Whaea Debz to get back out on shift supporting friends and whānau in need. Here’s a little look at the mahi from tūao (volunteers) on our pop-up shifts and repairs in the workshop in recent weeks! 🛠️

Vanessa knows firsthand how isolating it can be to navigate homelessness. Having experienced domestic violence she kept her situation hidden from friends and family.

"I didn't really want anybody to know what I was going through, so rather than seek out services or friends to help and stuff like that, I just lived in my car," Vanessa shared.

Today, she’s a tūao (volunteer) with Orange Sky Aotearoa in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, pulling up a chair for kōrero to support friends and whānau doing it tough.

In Aotearoa, 44% of us experience loneliness each month. An Orange Sky shift offers a welcoming and safe space for free laundry, hot showers, and judgement-free, genuine kōrero.

Whaea Debz rolled into her first shift at Onehunga on Tuesday after six weeks off the road and delivered nine loads of laundry! 🚐🧡

Our hearts sank when our Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland van was stolen from our base in August. Thanks to the quick work of the New Zealand Police, it was recovered just days later. Our workshop team got straight to mahi repairing the damage.

Through your incredible generosity, patience, and support, Whaea Debz has now been fully restored and is officially back to support friends and whānau doing it tough in the community.

We are so grateful to everyone who shared our posts, donated, tuned into the interview on TVNZ Breakfast and helped keep our community connected while Whaea Debz was out of action. Seeing those chairs back out and the hot water running was the best feeling! 🛠️✨

“I feel so strongly that everyone deserves dignity and respect, ideally a roof over their heads.” 🧡

"Orange Sky’s efforts to provide the homeless with showers and clean clothes as well as a listening ear and a cuppa inspires me," she shares. "This charity gives me, an ordinary person, a way to contribute through donations. Recently I decided to go a little further and leave a bequest. This is my way of standing alongside people doing it tough so no one has to face hardship alone."

Our awesome friends at New Zealand Beds Mt Wellington hosted a birthday party with a purpose at their Mt Wellington store, choosing to mark their milestone by raising funds for Orange Sky Aotearoa!

Our National Coordinator, Emah popped in to join the festivities, complete with refreshments and a draw to win a single mattress for anyone who donated. Having their team center their big day around helping others made the occasion truly special.

Every dollar raised helps keep our washing machines spinning, the hot showers running, and non-judgmental kōrero (conversation) flowing for friends and whānau doing it tough across the motu.

Every Friday in Ōtautahi Christchurch, the team at Kairos Food Rescue open their Community Hub to turn good food into great community support. By rescuing fresh and packaged kai that would otherwise go to waste, they’re serving up essentials to anyone who needs them - completely free, with zero judgment, just kindness.

Orange Sky is there alongside them. While the Kairos team fill pantries and plates, tūao (volunteers) from Orange Sky offer warm showers, clean laundry, and plenty of friendly chats.

The partnership creates more than just a place to grab food and a load of washing - it’s a Friday ritual where whānau can slow down, feel cared for, and leave with lighter shoulders.

Kevin from Kairos Food Rescue explains the value of the connection:

"It's awesome to have the Orange Sky team and van join us every week... We love that people coming to access kai from Kairos can also wash their clothes, and wash themselves, thanks to Orange Sky."

Orange Sky and Kairos' partnership to support the community creates other positive opportunities too. In a recent highlight, three Christchurch Rotary clubs - Cashmere, Papanui, and Ōtautahi Rotary Passport - joined forces to fundraise for 30 shelterbags (swag/portable sleeping unit), and approached us about how to distribute these to support local friends and whānau doing it tough. We worked with Kairos to link Rotary with the Christchurch City Mission, whose outreach workers are carrying out the distribution on Ōtautahi Christchurch streets to ensure these bags reach people who need them.
