🔥 RAGE AND THE MACHINE — Exhibition Opening 🔥
We are proud to present the exhibition celebration of Naomi Azoulay and the opening of - Rage and the Machine.

Sitting at the nexus of feminine rage and technology, Rage and the Machine explores rage as an inherently human response to the world around us — and asks what happens when caring deeply gives rise to rage.

Rather than something to suppress, Rage and the Machine reframes feminine rage as a force for healing, resilience, empowerment and transformation. 🔥

Naomi Azoulay is a Tāmaki Makaurau–based multidisciplinary artist whose portrait practice explores resilience, transformation and the politics of representation. Working across collage and painting, her psychologically charged portraits reclaim narrative authority and assert agency.

It was wonderful to see whānau, friends, artists and community come together to celebrate Naomi and this powerful body of work. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared in the opening. ❤️

Niue Hiapo printmaking sessions with ink on jute bags with Tupumaiaga A Niue Trust in celebration of Niue Language Week at Te Oro.Our trust uses hiapo patterns and design stencils that are hand carved and that reflects the land, plants and the ocean of Niue Island. Please join us in celebrating Niue Language Week with hiapo art!

Rage and the Machine sits at the nexus of feminine rage and technology, exploring rage as an inherently human response to the world around us. Drawing on generated imagery, the series considers what happens when caring deeply gives rise to rage, and how that rage can become a source of strength, empowerment and a catalyst for positive change. Working with AI tools as both medium and critique, the series questions how emerging technologies refl ect, distort and mask our realities. Images are digitally reworked and then translated into large-scale paintings, moving between digital and physical space.

Rather than something to suppress, Rage and the Machine reframes feminine rage as a force for healing, resilience and transformation.

ABOUT NAOMI:

Naomi Azoulay is a Tāmaki Makaurau–based multidisciplinary artist whose portrait practice explores resilience, transformation, and the politics of representation. Working across collage and painting, she produces psychologically charged portraits that assert agency and reclaim narrative authority.
Rooted in both studio practice and community engagement, her work navigates the intersection of the personal and the collective, examining visibility, displacement, and the construction of identity. Through vibrant colour, layered imagery, and bold compositional structure, Azoulay constructs portraits that are self-possessed and declarative. Her figures occupy space with clarity and strength, presenting identity as deliberate, sovereign, and actively defined.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in international collections. Alongside her studio practice, she develops projects that cultivate dialogue, participation, and cultural exchange across diverse communities.

🔥 VILLAGE - East Auckland Siva Afi Workshops 🔥

Learn the art of Siva Afi across an 8-session workshop programme for only $50, this is an opportunity to come together and showcase what you have learned through an end-of-year performance piece. Saturday 12th December.
Led by Amo Ieriko, award-winning Siva Afi practitioner, tutor, producer and cultural leader, the programme offers participants the opportunity to learn Siva Afi in a supportive, engaging and community-focused environment.

Amo is the Founder and Director of Siva Afi Aotearoa and the Siva Afi Festival and has played an important role in growing Aotearoa’s presence on the international fire knife stage while mentoring the next generation of performers.

✨ WORKSHOP: 10 x Sessions 🇹🇴

FĪ Ē! FĪ Ā! is an intergenerational Tongan cultural programme presented by Ta Kihe Ūho Ltd through Fe’unu Koula. Bringing together hiva, haka, storytelling and traditional arts, the programme takes participants on a creative journey from the Moana and the story of Māui through Tonga’s fonua, ancestral knowledge and cultural identity.
Across ten weeks, students will develop confidence, discipline and performance skills while learning the meaning and cultural values carried through Tongan music and dance. The programme concludes with a vibrant public showcase celebrating the transmission of cultural heritage from one generation to the next. Families and the wider community are invited to witness our students share their voices, movements and stories with pride.

✨Whakanuia Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori ✨
Nau mai, haere mai ki te whakanuia i Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori ki tō mātou taha o Ki Tua o Matariki - Ngāti Pāoa.

Join us for a special one-day activation alongside our regular kaupapa Māori free-play playgroup. This is an opportunity for tamariki aged 5 to 12 years old and whānau to engage with te reo Māori, creativity, and connection in a fun and welcoming environment.

Our activity stations will include: Kōwhatu (stone) painting Poi making

Alongside these activities, participants can enjoy our usual free-play setup while exploring te reo Māori through play, creativity, and whakawhanaungatanga!

RARANGA - MĀORI WEAVING 🌿
By learning the basics of mahi raranga (Māori flax weaving) in this beginner-friendly hands on workshop.

You’ll be introduced to fundamental weaving techniques using harakeke (flax) while gaining an appreciation for the cultural significance and traditions of raranga.

No prior experience is needed- all materials are provided, and you’ll leave with new skills and a beautiful woven piece to take home.

✨FINDING PIECE | BY BELLA ROBERTSON B

What a phenomenal way to kick off our 2026–2027 Artist Residency Programme at Te Oro. ❤️

A huge congratulations to Bell, Te oros first Artist in Residence for the year, on the incredible season of Finding Piece — an original theatre production written by Bella and developed through her time in residence at Te Oro.

As a Samoan/Tongan South Auckland artist, Bella brought together her practice as an actor, vocalist and puppeteer to share a deeply heartfelt story following Music, a young woman navigating grief, healing, self-discovery and ultimately finding peace within herself.

It has been an honor and a privilege to witness Bella’s journey throughout the residency — from the development of the work through to seeing Finding Piece come alive on stage. The growth, commitment and heart she has poured into this production has been incredible to witness.

As our first resident for 2026 - 2027 Bella has truly set the bar and the pace for what is to come. 🌺✨

This residency programme is about creating space for artists to develop their practice, take creative risks, tell their stories and bring new work to our communities — and Bella has been a phenomenal first artist to lead us into this next chapter.

Congratulations Bella on an incredible season and thank you for trusting us to support and champion your mahi. We are incredibly proud of what you have achieved and excited to see where Finding Piece — and your creative journey — goes next.
