The name Te Oro has been gifted to the centre by Ngāti Pāoa with the endorsement of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

‘Oro’ is the tonal reverberation or sound within a chamber. Maungarei - Mt Wellington, in its natural state, would contribute this low drone created by the winds moving over its volcanic crater. This natural phenomenon existed

before the migration of waka landing in the Tāmaki Makaurau region. The research carried out by Ngāti Pāoa considered that this iconic footprint is strongly connected to all Mana whenua in this rohe, giving a more meaningful link that connected those of yesteryear, currently and tomorrow. This gift was presented to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board with historical overlays to give value for all that resided in her.

Fale Sweet Fale is a collage and zine making workshop exploring the feeling of home through memory, family, language, and everyday Samoan life.

Using images, words, textures, and found materials, participants are invited to create their own visual “fale” on paper, piecing together stories, memories, and moments that connect us to home, family, and village.

In this workshop, we will explore foundational Siva Samoa movements while unpacking their cultural meanings — how each gesture reflects our connection to land, ocean, sky, ancestry, and community. 🌺 We are deeply honoured and incredibly excited to have award-winning artist, curator, and cultural practitioner Rosanna Raymond for Mamalu – A Lineage Embodied.

🌺 A pioneering artist, storyteller, curator, and founding member of the Pacific Sisters, Rosanna’s practice has profoundly shaped contemporary Pacific and Indigenous art both within Aotearoa and internationally. Her work continues to challenge and expand conversations around embodiment, ancestral knowledge, cultural sovereignty, and the vā — the relational spaces that connect us.

🌺 Through projects such as SaVAge K’lub and decades of collaborative cultural work, Rosanna has created powerful spaces for Pacific storytelling, performance, adornment, and Indigenous knowledge systems to be seen, activated, and celebrated.

This workshop centres the malu as a living archive of identity, genealogy, and Indigenous knowledge — inviting reflection through discussion, writing, drawing, and embodied practice.

This two-day workshop introduces participants to the traditional art practice of siapo-making as a living practice. Through talanoa, we will explore the history of siapo in Sāmoa, its cultural significance and the ways it continues to be reimagined today.

💫Introducing our first performing artist in residence the talented Bella Robertson.

As part of their journey, Bella will engage with the community through workshops, sharing’s, or open rehearsals, offering insight into their creative process and building community.

🌺Bella Robertson is of Samoan/Tongan descent, was born and raised in South Auckland, and proudly resides in Mangere.

Her love for music ignited her passion for theatre. She has been on several tours across Aotearoa as an actor, live vocalist and puppeteer with theatre companies since 2019.

Bella’s repertoire includes that of Auckland Theatre Company, Capital E National Theatre for Children and in 2025 she made her sixth appearance as a lead puppeteer with The Glow Show company.

We look forward to supporting Bella and sharing their journey over the coming months.

This residency provides a space for an artist to develop new work across performance, movement, theatre and sound, while being grounded in the vibrant and diverse community here at Te Oro.

Over the residency period, the artist will be working closely within their studio environment—exploring ideas, refining their practice, and pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance.

📣 Introducing our first Digital Visual Artist in Residence — we’re excited to welcome Atirak Noscaj into the Te Oro programme 2026 - 2027!

From April - July Atirak will be based our studio at Te Oro, developing new work, experimenting with digital processes, and bringing their creative vision to life. This residency marks an exciting step in expanding our commitment to digital and emerging art practices within our community.

We look forward to following your journey over the coming months, with a public exhibition this August where their work will be shared and celebrated.

🌺 Atirak Noskcaj is an Auckland based artist working across digital media, painting, and installation. Her practice centres Pasifika nostalgia, drawing from everyday moments within her community to explore themes of identity, memory, and belonging. Through both intimate and immersive works, she captures the emotional textures of lived experience, often highlighting stories that are underrepresented in mainstream narratives. Her work invites audiences to reflect, recognise, and reconnect with the familiar, while honouring the depth and nuance of Pacific life.

✨ We’re proud to share the exhibition opening celebrating Tui Hirabayashi and her work, Study of Hinenuitepō and Papatūānuku. This powerful series centres the female body through atua wāhine Hinenuitepō and Papatūānuku and their associated pūrākau—figures many of us are first introduced to in childhood.

⏰ 02 May - 11 July 2026

Tui repositions herself as storyteller, weaving personal experience into the retelling of these familiar stories. Through the female form, the works explore bodily autonomy and consider how the positioning of the body shapes the way we perceive female figures—not only as atua wāhine, but as reflections of women in modern society. The series also examines how artistic choices—such as placement, scale, age, and presence—can influence interpretation.

Ngā mihi nui to matua Raniera for opening the exhibition with a karakia. To all the artists, whānau, and community who showed up to support. These works reflect months of dedication, and creative development.
