Musick Point Radio Group

Musick Point Radio Group Musick Point Radio Group manages the historic Musick Memorial Radio Station, home of former coast radio stations Auckland Radio ZLD and ZLF.

The Musick Point Radio Group is an incorporated organisation of licensed amateur radio operators dedicated to preserving the historic radio communications station at Musick Point in Auckland, New Zealand. Musick Point and the Musick Memorial Radio Station were named after one of the greatest of Pacific aviation pioneers, Captain Edwin C Musick. Captain Musick piloted the first Pan American Airways

flight from the USA to New Zealand in 1937. The following year, he and his crew were lost shortly after becoming airborne from Pago Pago when their flying boat Samoan Clipper is believed to have exploded in mid-air. The Musick Memorial Radio Station was purpose-built as a memorial to Captain Musick and as a high performance long-range radio station. The station went into operation in August 1939, although it was not officially opened until January 1942. It was the home of Auckland Radio ZLF (aviation radio) until 1966 and Auckland Radio ZLD (marine radio) until the New Zealand government closed the country’s coast radio stations in 1993.

Today on World Environment Day we have big sustainability news to share.
We’ve reduced our carbon emissions by 76% since we began our Toitū Carbon Reduce audits – and we’re incredibly proud of our progress.
Our recent audit results showed a further drop in emissions, down to just 141.63 tonnes from 596.89 tonnes in 2017 – that’s a 35% reduction in the past year alone.
Our biggest win? Switching to wood-based biofuel in the Pumphouse boiler and Steam Tram No. 100. But it’s also the smaller, everyday choices – thoughtful purchasing, sustainable products, and clean energy – that are really adding up.
A huge shout out to our team for making sustainability part of how we work every day.
Toitū Carbon Reduce certification isn’t a tick-box for MOTAT; it’s a marker of the kind of museum we want to be for future generations.

Sixty years ago today, 29 lives lost when Kaitawa ZMVC went down.

MV Kaitawa was a 2485 ton collier owned by the Union Steam Ship Company. She was lost with all 29 crew on 23 May 1966, near Cape Reinga.
