Calendar Girls!!

We have a lot of sweet girls available at the moment and very few applications! Summers coming and all these gals want for Christmas is a new home.

Hollie: F, Auckland, Approx 20 months
Hollie is a young female with a big personality and an even bigger heart. She’s sassy in all the best ways, adores human company, and bonds quickly with the people she trusts. If you’re looking for a loyal shadow who loves cuddles, couch time, and car rides, Hollie is your girl.

Ruby: F, Auckland, Approx 2.5yrs
Ruby is a full on girl who will need some ongoing training. She loves hard but has not had any boundaries in her first few years. Ruby would go well with a mature well trained male dog and older kids.

Irie: F Auckland, Approx. 4yrs
This sweet girl is all about love, closeness, and being part of your world. She’s very clingy in the best way—if you’re looking for a dog who will stick by your side (literally), she’s your match.
She’s still learning her basic commands and has a very good sit , but she’s eager and improving every day. On walks, she does really well on leash, though she can be a bit reactive at times—she’ll need a patient owner willing to keep working with her and build her confidence.
Her excitement for walks is absolutely adorable—expect zoomies and joyful leaps into the air the moment she realises it’s time to go out! She also shows interest in birds, so a secure space and attentive handling are important.

Sissy: F Auckland, Approx 3yrs
Sissy is very timid but an absolute sweetheart. She has lived with her brother but sadly was never socialised much. In the early days she went on outings and pack walks but as life got busy the outings fell away.
There has been no abuse, maybe slight neglect but Sissy is all about forgiveness and is just loving life now. She is currently in foster at K9 Heaven and is having a blast with all the other dogs. Walks lovely on lead and would love a doggie brother!

Cancer

No not the star sign, although it is mine, but the nasty disease that is rife in both humans and our dogs.

As I mentioned earlier my mother has been very sick (hence the radio silence) and she has just been released from hospital after having the upper and middle lobes of her right lung removed thanks to lung cancer. When in ICU she choked on a piece of carrot and had to be resuscitated, then ended up with blood clots in her leg going into her lungs. Yep it's been a bit of a rollercoaster. Now we navigate the chemo journey.

Before her major operation her foster girl Aurora had to be put to sleep due to cancer. We just can't escape it sadly.

But the reason for this post is to say PLEASE get regular blood tests on your dogs especially as they age. Our Rotties are predisposed to cancer and early diagnosis & treatment can help stop the suffering and in some cases save our dogs. Even if the bloods are normal it then gives the vets something to compare to should your dog become ill.

If any of our rescues show signs of illness or are senior we always do full bloods. My own dogs have bloods done every 12-18 months especially if they are about to undergo a procedure that requires a general anaesthetic.

Talk to your vet and see if its right for your dog.

The Murder House!

Well not quite but for those of us who remember the dentist at school we often called it The Murder House.

When our dogs are under for desexing it's standard for us to get ears, eyes and teeth checked. On a routine spay the vet noticed Ruby had a broken canine.

So luckily for our latest rescue girl Ruby there were no murder house vibes as the dental specialists did an amazing job. She was pampered, cuddled, fed and hardly noticed that she was knocked out with her canine tooth extracted! Thanks team!

While it was an expensive tooth she had a pocket at the root of the tooth that was infected and she would have been in pain for at least a year! Poor girl! Thank goodness we caught it before any infection into the bone or it would have been a major!

The canine teeth are critical for dogs when chewing and tearing but in Ruby's case a root canal would not have been a viable option. When you see the size and how much of that tooth would have been in the gum you can see when they exert force in a bite just how much damage they can do!

Once Ruby is all healed she will be available for adoption! She is also Miss May in our 2027 Calendar.

2.9.26 His name is Zuko and he went missing from Einstein Street, Gisborne on Monday night, 31st August. He is microchipped and registered, a boy. He had a chain collar on. He has epilepsy
