Back in March a group of ceramics enthusiasts were sitting around a table together at ASP brainstorming ways of sharing their love of such things with others. Of course, there’s nothing like cool merchandise! (We’re doing other cool stuff too, promise). Inspired by our heritage, printed on quality gear and hand screen printed in Te Matau-a-Māui. To pre-order see the link in our bio. Order something now and we’ll even deliver it to you at Clay Week for you. Thank you to our friends Chloe and Hayley for letting me gatecrash their Monday at Taradale Pottery to take a few pictures.

Welcome Frances Martin

Based in Te Matau-a-Māui with her whānau, Frances is the granddaughter of local potters Bruce and Estelle Martin and kaitiaki of their heritage home, kilns and ceramic legacy. She’s a passionate advocate for ceramics appreciation, education, collecting and everyday use. She works as part of an impressive team at Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga so brings experience in the art world to her council role and well as years of experience in education and community organisations. She writes, is an amateur archivist and op-shop ceramics sleuth. She spends too much time curating her Instagram feed and is obsessed with pastries

We are so stoked to have Frances on board our Council!!

Introducing the wonderful Kate one of our ceramic nz board members ☀️

Kate grew up surrounded by women who sewed and painted and has been seeing faces in flowery curtains and the bark of trees since she was a child. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Dunedin School of Art and lives in Ōtepoti/Dunedin.
Kate works primarily with clay and is interested in how this very wild material is so bound up in our domestic lives, she says: ‘I love how clay can dress itself up as almost anything whilst also carrying its history of giant mountains worn down to the tiniest pieces.’

Kate has held several residencies including at Tylee Cottage, Whanganui and Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan. Recent projects include: The 14th Namwon International Ceramic Art Camp (South Korea), Suite 2023 (Dunedin Public Art Gallery), The Commons (with Dunedin Dream Brokerage & Dunedin Botanic Gardens, 2021) and Things don’t end at their edges (Sarjeant Gallery, 2019).

Welcome Josh Jones to the Ceramics NZ Council!!
Josh is the co-owner of McGlashen Pottery, with his partner Coral. They have a ginger cat named Coriander and are loving being involved in a creative way with clay everyday. With a background in sales as well as film & television Josh loves the face to face experiences he gets in their Brightwater studio, meeting people and learning about their stories is a big part of where he gets his energy. Josh can’t wait to tell more stories about the fabulous ceramicists in the Top of the South.
