Introducing our first Speaker for the New Zealand Photography Industry Evening - held in Auckland this November!

Chris Traill has been working in the photography industry since leaving school, so near on 50 years. He lives and breathes photography.

He began as a studio assistant at a thriving Auckland commercial studio of the time, Barry McKay Photography. From 1980, the next 10 years he worked in photo finishing as a printer in various photo labs here and abroad taking on small photography jobs and exhibiting along the way, and at the age of 30 began working full time as a photographer running his business from a home studio in Papatoetoe, which he still operates out of today.

His career has included extensive work within all genres of photography. Events, fashion, weddings and portraiture being the main focus.

Chris is best known for his concert and music photography and extensive work within Maori and Pacific Island communities covering events like Polyfest, Te Matatini and Pasifika Festivals.

He's an accredited member of New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) and has achieved a Master of Photography with Distinction within that organisation for awards accumulated within the Iris Awards programme.

Chris was on the NZIPP Auckland regional committee for 15 years and was chairperson for 5 of those years. He was honoured to be awarded the prestigious NZIPP Gold Award in 2017 for services to the institute. He is also a member of AIPA.

He has judged NZIPP Iris Awards and at various PSNZ camera clubs including club night competitions, salons and the creative focus annual competition.

We can't wait to welcome Chris to our event and see his 10 chosen images - just a very short glimpse into to wonderful career Chris has had as a professional photographer.

What a year for Auckland/Northland at the 2026 NZIPP Iris Awards! 🏆

With the Iris Awards wrapped up for another year, we want to give a huge congratulations to all of our Auckland/Northland photographers. It was an incredibly successful year for our region, with so many fantastic results and awards achieved by our members.

And to top it off… Auckland/Northland tied for FIRST PLACE with Canterbury/ Westland in the 2026 Curtis Poole Award!

The Curtis Poole Award has a special history within NZIPP. It was established in 2009 in memory of two long-standing and colourful characters of NZIPP, Brian Curtis and Richard Poole. Both were Honorary Fellows who contributed enormously to the Institute and to photography in New Zealand.

Each year, the award goes to the NZIPP region with the highest aggregate score from the highest-scoring entries of its four top-performing members.

So a massive congratulations to the four photographers whose images put Auckland/Northland at the top this year:

Q&A with NZIPP Accredited Photographer Graham Murphy

This week we’re excited to introduce Graham Murphy in the PRO Report newsletter, the creative power behind Kerikeri’s Northern Exposure Photography and one of the newest additions to the NZIPP Honours Council Team. Graham brings a unique perspective to our community. Before mastering high-end architectural lighting, aerial imagery, and commercial portraiture. he spent 14 years as an NZ Police officer and trained forensic photographer.
