Oldest & largest not-for-profit working with children & adults with Intellectual Disability in India Jai Vakeel School was founded in 1944 by Mr. and Mrs.

Jai Vakeel School is one of the oldest and largest not-for-profit Institutes in the country serving the entire spectrum of Intellectual Disability from borderline IQ to mild, moderate, severe and profoundly challenged. Our school has over 750 students who are mentally challenged and/or have other related disabilities such as autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, visual and / or hearing impairment. Our youngest child is 3 years old and comes to us for therapy and our oldest student is 50 and works in our Sheltered Workshop. 76% of our students are from the lower socioeconomic strata. Hormusjee Vakeel who’s daughter Dina was born with Down’s Syndrome as no such establishment existed. Our foundation has grown from a simple school in the Vakeel residence serving a few children to the two-acre campus serving 750 students that exists today. Over the past 80 years we have touched the lives of lakhs of children and their families.

There is always more to learn, even after 80 years of the journey.

In August, we welcomed Stepfanie Cheong, Director of Temasek’s Community Stewardship team, along with Jan Sahagun, to our Mumbai campus. They explored our programmes and understood how JVF has grown over the years to further our mission of Inclusion for people with Intellectual Disability. They also interacted with students from our NIOS classrooms about the subjects they were learning and how they were preparing for their examinations.

The learning, of course, went both ways. The Temasek team shared examples from Singapore, including agencies supporting persons with intellectual disabilities, government-supported inclusive spaces, companies and impact enterprises championing inclusive hiring.

We are grateful to have partners like Temasek alongside us, who not only support our journey but also share their knowledge and perspectives. Together, we continue to learn, evolve and find better ways to build a more inclusive India for persons with Intellectual Disability.

Yesterday was unprecedented.

For the first time, a Chief Minister joined Special Educators on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, addressed and celebrated over 2,700 Special Educators connected with Disha Abhiyan across the state.

The room, both online and in-person, was full of the people who made this moment possible: our CSR and philanthropic partners, who believed in Disha Abhiyan from day one and backed it all the way to scale; NIEPID, who validated our curriculum; and the Government of Maharashtra, who mandated its implementation across the state.

But the thousands of Special Educators in that room — and in classrooms across Maharashtra — are the reason Disha Abhiyan works. Every single day, they bring out the best in their students, with skill and patience that rarely make headlines.

Yesterday, that work was seen. 💙
