What does equality look like from above? A perfect circle.

Today we mark the founding of Nahalal, Israel's first moshav. On this day in 1921, pioneers of the Second and Third Aliyot arrived in the Jezreel Valley to build a new model of community.

Nahalal's iconic circular layout, designed by architect Richard Kauffmann, was far more than an architectural choice. It reflected the founders' deep commitment to equality: every family received an equal plot of land, no one lived closer to the center than anyone else, and everyone gathered around the community's shared public institutions.

Over the years, Nahalal gave rise to some of Israel's most influential figures, from Moshe Dayan and Hannah Senesh to Meir Shalev.

איך נראה השוויון מלמעלה? כמו מעגל מושלם.

היום אנחנו מציינים את הקמת נהלל - מושב העובדים הראשון בישראל.
בתאריך העברי של היום, בשנת 1921, הגיעו לעמק יזרעאל אנשי העליות השנייה והשלישית כדי להקים יישוב מסוג חדש.

הצורה המעגלית המפורסמת של נהלל, שתוכננה על ידי האדריכל ריכרד קאופמן, לא הייתה רק גחמה עיצובית - היא שיקפה את עקרונות השוויון העמוקים של המייסדים: לכולם יש חלקה שווה, אף אחד לא קרוב יותר למרכז, וכולם מקיפים יחד את מוסדות הציבור.

לאורך השנים יצאו מנהלל כמה מהדמויות הבולטות שלנו - ממשה דיין, דרך חנה סנש ועד מאיר שלו.

“In Basel, I founded the Jewish State.”

Those were Theodor Herzl's famous words after the First Zionist Congress, held in the elegant Casino Hall in Basel in August 1897.

A total of 208 delegates from 16 countries gathered there, inspired by Herzl's vision. But this was far more than a conference—it was a historic turning point.

At the First Zionist Congress, the goals and principles of the Zionist movement were formally defined in what became known as the Basel Program, establishing the political foundation for the Jewish national home.

It's remarkable to think about this group of men and women who dared to dream on such a grand scale despite the difficult reality facing European Jewry. Their vision laid the foundations for our national home.

"בבאזל יסדתי את מדינת היהודים"
זה קרה באולם "בית הקזינו" המפואר בבאזל. באוגוסט 1897 התכנסו 208 צירים שהגיעו מ-16 מדינות שונות, בעקבות ההתעוררות הלאומית שעורר בנימין זאב הרצל – לקונגרס הציוני הראשון!

הקונגרס היה יותר מאשר כנס - הוא היה רגע של מפנה היסטורי שבו הוגדרו מטרותיה ועקרונותיה של התנועה הציונית, במה שנודע לימים כ"תוכנית באזל".

מדהים לחשוב על קבוצת האנשים הזו, שהעזה לחלום בענק למרות המציאות המורכבת של יהדות אירופה, והניחה את היסודות המדיניים לבית הלאומי שלנו.

Labor leader, journalist, and one of Zionism's most original thinkers—today we mark the yahrzeit of Berl Katznelson.

Berl was among the founders of the Histadrut and helped draft Mapai's founding platform. But unlike many of his fellow Labor Zionists, he believed the Zionist movement had to remain deeply connected to Jewish tradition.
He believed Judaism, Shabbat, and the Jewish festivals deserved a place of honor in the Zionist project. To him, a truly socialist Zionism had to be rooted in the Jewish people's cultural and historical heritage.

Berl Katznelson passed away at the age of 57 and was laid to rest at the Kinneret Cemetery beside his first love, Sarah Shmukler. His legacy—bridging spirit, Jewish tradition, and pioneering labor—remains alive to this day.

מנהיג פועלים, עיתונאי, ואחד מההוגים המרתקים של הציונות: היום אנחנו מציינים את יום פטירתו של ברל כצנלסון.

ברל היה ממקימי מוסדות ההסתדרות ומנסח המצע של מפלגת מפא"י, אבל בניגוד לרבים מחבריו לתנועת העבודה, הוא ראה חשיבות רבה בחיבור בין התנועה הציונית והמסורת.

הוא דרש יחס של כבוד לדת היהודית, לחגים ולשבת, והבין שציונות סוציאליסטית אמיתית חייבת להישען על שורשים תרבותיים והיסטוריים עמוקים.

הוא נפטר בגיל 57 ונקבר בבית הקברות של קבוצת כנרת, לצד אהבתו הראשונה, שרה שמוקלר. מורשתו, המחברת בין רוח, מסורת לעבודת כפיים, חיה ונושמת עד היום.

Some dates are etched in blood into the history of the Jewish Yishuv.

Today marks 97 years since the violent attacks on Jewish communities during the events of 1929, a wave of riots, massacres, and terror that swept across the Land of Israel.

During the violence, 133 Jews were murdered and 339 were injured. Entire communities were destroyed or abandoned, including long-established Jewish communities that had flourished for generations.

In the aftermath, the British government appointed the Shaw Commission to investigate the events, a process that ultimately led to the Hope-Simpson Report and the publication of the Passfield White Paper, which significantly reduced British support for Zionism.

Today, we remember those who were murdered, and we remain committed to building, protecting, and strengthening our national home.

ישנם תאריכים שנחרטו בדם בדברי הימים של היישוב העברי. היום לפני 97 שנים, התחוללו מאורעות תרפ"ט - סדרה של פרעות אלימות ומעשי טרור קשים מצד ערביי ארץ ישראל נגד הקהילות היהודיות.

במהלך ימי הפרעות נרצחו 133 יהודים ו-339 נפצעו. יישובים שלמים וקהילות עתיקות ומשגשגות נחרבו וננטשו. בעקבות האירועים הקשים מימשה בריטניה את ועדת שו לחקירת המאורעות, שהובילה בהמשך לדו"ח הופ-סימפסון ולפרסומו של "הספר הלבן של פאספילד" - שצמצם משמעותית את התמיכה הבריטית בציונות.

אנחנו זוכרים את הנופלים, וממשיכים לבנות, להגן ולחזק את הבית הלאומי שלנו.

At the height of summer comes one of the happiest and most romantic dates on the Hebrew calendar: Tu B’Av, the Jewish holiday of love.
The roots of this special day go back centuries. The Mishnah describes Tu B’Av as one of the happiest days of the year, when the young women and men of Jerusalem, dressed in white, would gather to celebrate with dancing in the vineyards.

After centuries in which the holiday was largely absent from Jewish life, the Zionist movement and the renewal of Jewish life in the Land of Israel gave it new meaning. Educator and writer Ze’ev Yaavetz even proposed reviving Tu B’Av as a “Festival of Peace.”

During the First Aliyah, it was celebrated as a harvest festival, and the winery in Rishon LeZion was inaugurated on Tu B’Av. In the 1940s, several kibbutzim in the Jezreel Valley held regional celebrations featuring dancing, matchmaking, and community gatherings.

Over the past few decades, Tu B’Av has firmly established itself as Israel’s holiday of love. For us, it is a wonderful example of how Judaism as culture can take the raw materials of ancient tradition, breathe new life into them, create meaningful contemporary connections, and celebrate love, creativity, and community.

בשיא הקיץ מגיע המועד הכי רומנטי ושמח בלוח השנה העברי - ט"ו באב, חג האהבה שלנו!
שורשיו של היום המיוחד הזה עמוקים מאוד, והוא מוזכר עוד במשנה כאחד משני הימים הטובים ביותר בשנה, שבו יצאו בני ובנות ירושלים לבושים בבגדים לבנים כדי לחגוג במחולות בכרמים.

לאחר שנים ארוכות בגלות שבהן המועד כמעט ולא צוין, התנועה הציונית וההתיישבות בארץ העניקו לו חיים חדשים ומרגשים: המורה זאב יעבץ הציע לחדש את היום כ"חג השלום".

בימי העלייה הראשונה הוא נחגג כחג הבציר, ובמועד זה ממש נחנך היקב בראשון לציון. בשנות ה-40 קיימו במספר קיבוצים בעמק יזרעאל חגיגות מחולות ושידוכים אזוריות.

בעשורים האחרונים ביסס ט"ו באב את מעמדו כחג האהבה והתרבות הכל-כך ייחודי לנו. עבורנו, זוהי עדות מופלאה לדרך שבה יהדות כתרבות יודעת לקחת חומרי גלם של מסורת עתיקה, להפיח בהם רוח מודרנית, ליצור חיבורים עכשוויים ולחגוג אהבה, יצירה ושותפות.

1.900 educadores, 22 expertos internacionales, y una gran pregunta: ¿cómo conectamos el vertiginoso avance tecnológico con el corazón humano que late?

Concluimos en Buenos Aires el Octavo Congreso Internacional de Educación Judía, un evento dedicado por completo al tema: "Tecnología y humanidad: un diálogo profundo para el progreso de la educación".

En una era de desarrollo acelerado de la inteligencia artificial, el rol del educador cobra un significado más profundo que nunca.

El tema de la conferencia de Ariel Cohen Imach, director ejecutivo del Comité de Educación de AMIA, sigue resonando en nosotros: "¿Cómo podemos aprovechar este potencial sin perder la centralidad del vínculo humano? ¿Qué lugar ocupan la sensibilidad, la presencia humana y la transmisión de valores en contextos cada vez más mediados por la tecnología?".

La respuesta que encontramos juntos en el congreso es la construcción de una educación que mantenga un diálogo abierto con la innovación tecnológica, pero que siga siendo humana en su esencia.

סיימנו בבואנוס איירס את הכינוס הבינלאומי השמיני לחינוך יהודי - אירוע שהוקדש כולו לנושא: "טכנולוגיה ואנושיות: דיאלוג מעמיק לקידום החינוך".

בעידן של התפתחות הבינה המלאכותית, תפקיד המחנך מקבל משמעות עמוקה מאי פעם.

נושא הרצאתו של אריאל כהן אימאץ, מנכ"ל ועד החינוך של AMIA, עדיין מהדהד בנו: "כיצד ניתן לנצל את הפוטנציאל הזה מבלי לאבד את מרכזיותו של הקשר האנושי? אילו מקום תופסים הרגישות, הנוכחות האנושית והעברת הערכים בהקשרים שהולכים ונעשים מתווכים יותר ויותר על ידי הטכנולוגיה?".
התשובה שמצאנו יחד בכינוס היא בנייה של חינוך שמנהל דיאלוג פתוח עם החדשנות הטכנולוגית, אך ממשיך להיות אנושי מיסודו.

Tisha B’Av is observed in Jewish tradition as a national day of mourning and fasting, commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples and the many tragedies that have shaped Jewish history.
It marks the culmination of the mourning period that begins on the 17th of Tammuz and is traditionally observed through fasting, sitting on the floor, and the reading of Eicha (Lamentations) and kinot (elegies).

With the rise of the Zionist movement and the rebuilding of Jewish life in the Land of Israel, complex questions emerged about the place of Tisha B’Av among secular Jews. One of the most notable responses came from Berl Katznelson, who sharply criticized youth movement leaders for holding a summer camp on Tisha B’Av. He argued that disconnecting from Jewish memory and history came at a cost, and that as long as parts of the Jewish people continued to face hardship, the national day of mourning should not be forgotten.

For those who embrace Judaism as culture, Tisha B’Av invites us to pause and reflect on the role this day can play in modern Israel. It offers an opportunity for an open conversation about the tension between remembering what was lost and learning from the past, and about our shared responsibility to build a liberal, democratic, and caring society.

תשעה באב מצוין במסורת היהודית כיום אבל לאומי ותענית על חורבן בתי המקדש והאסונות שפקדו את האומה לאורך ההיסטוריה.

מדובר ביום השיא של ימי האבלות שמתחילים בי"ז בתמוז, והוא מלווה במנהגי צום מקיפים, ישיבה על הרצפה וקריאת מגילת איכה וקינות.

עם בניית היישוב בארץ בתקופת הציונות, עלו שאלות מורכבות בנוגע למעמדו של היום בקרב הציבור הלא-דתי. אחת הביקורות החריפות היתה של ברל כצנלסון על מדריכי תנועת נוער שקבעו מחנה קיץ בעיצומו של יום תשעה באב. ברל יצא נגד התלישות מהמורשת וההיסטוריה, וקבע כי כל עוד חלקים מעם ישראל נתונים במצוקה - אין לשכוח את יום האבל הלאומי.

בתנועה ליהדות כתרבות, המועד הזה מזמין אותנו לעצור ולחשוב על אופיו הרצוי של היום במדינת ישראל המודרנית. זהו זמן יקר לשיח פתוח על המתח שבין זיכרון ואבל על מה שחרב, לבין לקחי העבר, סולידריות ואחריות משותפת על בניין החברה הליברלית והדמוקרטית שלנו.
