הדמוקרטיה מתחילה בקלפי - אבל היא לא נגמרת שם.

הזכות לבחור ולהיבחר היא אחד היסודות המרכזיים של מדינת ישראל מאז הקמתה. אבל דמוקרטיה היא גם מה שקורה יום אחרי הבחירות: היכולת לכבד הכרעה, לשמור על זכויות המיעוט, לאפשר ביקורת ולהמשיך לחיות יחד גם כשאנחנו חלוקים כמעט על הכול.

כבר במגילת העצמאות התחייבה מדינת ישראל ל"שוויון זכויות חברתי ומדיני גמור לכל אזרחיה". האחריות לשמור על ההבטחה הזאת לא שייכת רק לנבחרי הציבור - אלא לכולנו.

Democracy begins at the ballot box but it does not end there.

The right to vote and to be elected has been a cornerstone of the State of Israel since its inception. Yet democracy is also defined by what happens the day after the election: the ability to respect a decision, uphold minority rights, allow for criticism, and continue living together even when we disagree on almost everything.

As early as the Declaration of Independence, the State of Israel pledged to ensure "complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants." The responsibility to uphold this promise lies not only with elected officials, but with all of us.

Thirty-two years ago, a border that had served as a line of confrontation for decades transformed into a border of peace. On October 26, 1994, the peace agreement between Israel and Jordan was signed. This historic accord demonstrated that relations defined by conflict could be transformed into diplomatic ties, cooperation, and dialogue. Zionism sought not only to establish a national home for the Jewish people but also to secure their place among the nations of the region. The peace agreement with Jordan marked a moment when this vision took tangible form.

לפני 32 שנים גבול שהיה במשך עשרות שנים קו עימות הפך לגבול של שלום. ב־26 באוקטובר 1994 נחתם הסכם השלום בין ישראל לירדן. ההסכם ההיסטורי הראה שאפשר להפוך יחסי עימות ליחסים מדיניים, לשיתוף פעולה ולדיאלוג. הציונות ביקשה לא רק להקים בית לאומי לעם היהודי, אלא גם להבטיח את מקומו בין עמי האזור. הסכם השלום עם ירדן היה אחד הרגעים שבהם החזון הזה קיבל צורה ממשית. #

"Violence gnaws on the foundation of democracy" Today, we mark the Memorial Day for Yitzhak Rabin - Israel’s fifth Prime Minister, the Chief of Staff during the Six-Day War, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Rabin’s life story encompasses nearly every pivotal chapter of the Israeli story: the Palmach, the founding of the State, the IDF, Jerusalem, political leadership, and the peace process. This Memorial Day also reminds us of the moment when political disagreement turned into lethal violence. That lesson remains vital and relevant: a democratic society must know how to navigate fierce disagreement without turning an opponent into an enemy.

"אלימות היא כרסום יסוד הדמוקרטיה הישראלית". היום אנחנו מציינים את יום הזיכרון ליצחק רבין - ראש הממשלה החמישי של מדינת ישראל, רמטכ"ל מלחמת ששת הימים וחתן פרס נובל לשלום. סיפור חייו של רבין עובר דרך כמעט כל התחנות המרכזיות של הסיפור הישראלי: הפלמ"ח, הקמת המדינה, צה"ל, איחוד ירושלים, הנהגה מדינית ותהליך השלום. יום הזיכרון שלו מזכיר לנו גם את הרגע שבו מחלוקת פוליטית הפכה לאלימות קטלנית. הלקח הזה נשאר חי ורלוונטי: חברה דמוקרטית חייבת לדעת לנהל מחלוקת חריפה בלי להפוך את היריב לאויב.

שליחי "מדריכי חגים" של המחלקה למפעלים ציוניים והסוכנות היהודית חזרו משבועיים של פעילות בקהילות יהודיות באוהיו - ואפשר לומר שהאושפיזין הפעם עבדו לשני הכיוונים.

הם הגיעו להתארח, אבל מהר מאוד הפכו לחלק מהקהילה: פגשו ילדים ומשפחות, העבירו פעילויות לסוכות, שוחחו על ישראל ונהנו מקבלת פנים חמה בכל מקום.

כיף לראות איך חג של אירוח יכול להפוך להזדמנות אמיתית לחיבור.

The "Holiday counselors" Shlichim of the Department of Zionist Enterprises and the Jewish Agency have returned from two weeks of activity in Jewish communities in Ohio - and you could say that the ushpizin worked both ways this time.

They came to be guests, but they quickly became part of the community: they met children and families, transferred activities to Sukkot, talked about Israel and enjoyed a warm welcome everywhere.

It's fun to see how a holiday of hospitality can become a real opportunity for connection.

Theodor Herzl dreamed of a Jewish state long before he visited the Land of Israel. Then, in 1898, that vision met reality.

Herzl arrived in the Land hoping to promote political support for the Zionist idea. During his visit, he encountered the developing Jewish Yishuv and saw firsthand the land he had written about and envisioned from afar in Europe. For a man so deeply identified with the concept and the vision, the visit was an extraordinary encounter between imagination and reality. That gap remains a defining aspect of Zionism to this day: how does one take a grand vision and transform it into a tangible reality - one that is complex, ever-changing, and not always exactly as originally imagined?

בנימין זאב הרצל חלם על מדינה יהודית הרבה לפני שביקר בארץ ישראל. ואז, ב־1898, החזון פגש את המציאות.

הרצל הגיע לארץ בתקווה לקדם תמיכה מדינית ברעיון הציוני. במהלך הביקור הוא פגש את היישוב היהודי המתפתח וראה מקרוב את הארץ שעליה כתב ודמיין מאירופה. עבור מי שהיה מזוהה כל כך עם הרעיון והחזון, הביקור בארץ היה מפגש יוצא דופן בין הדמיון לבין המציאות. הפער הזה מלווה את הציונות עד היום: איך לוקחים חזון גדול והופכים אותו לחיים ממשיים - מורכבים, משתנים ולא תמיד כפי שדמיינו אותם מראש?

Can you guess which two Israeli prime ministers celebrated their birthdays just one day apart?

Two key leaders of the Zionist movement and the young State of Israel: David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Sharett, were born just a day apart. While they were partners in establishing the state, they were often ideological rivals. Ben-Gurion tended to emphasize decisive action, strength, and sovereignty, whereas Sharett placed greater weight on diplomacy, international relations, and political caution. The debate between them reminds us of something important: Zionism was never a monolithic movement. From the very beginning, it was shaped by a dialogue regarding the path forward, the values involved, and the character of the state we wish to build together.

יכולים לנחש אילו שני ראשי ממשלה חגגו יום הולדת בהפרש של יום אחד?

לפני מספר שנים נולדו שניים מהמנהיגים המרכזיים של התנועה הציונית ושל מדינת ישראל הצעירה: דוד בן גוריון ומשה שרת. השניים היו שותפים להקמת המדינה, אבל לא פעם גם יריבים רעיוניים. בן־גוריון נטה להדגיש הכרעה, כוח וריבונות; שרת העניק משקל רב יותר לדיפלומטיה, ליחסים בינלאומיים ולזהירות מדינית. הדיון ביניהם מזכיר לנו משהו חשוב: הציונות מעולם לא הייתה קול אחד. מראשיתה היא נבנתה מתוך שיח על הדרך, על הערכים ועל דמותה של המדינה שאנחנו רוצים ליצור יחד.

A Palmach commander, a government minister, an educator and above all, a man who believed that security and society are inseparable.

Today marks the 108th anniversary of the birth of Yigal Allon, a central figure among the founding generation of the State of Israel. Allon was a military leader and statesman, but also an educator who believed that Zionism did not end with the establishment of the state. For him, the Zionist mission encompassed building a society, education, the establishment of communities, mutual responsibility, and the pursuit of peace grounded in security.

His legacy reminds us that Zionism is not merely a question of how to defend the state but also of what kind of state we wish to build.

מפקד פלמ"ח, שר, מחנך - ובעיקר אדם שהאמין שביטחון וחברה אינם נפרדים זה מזה.

היום אנחנו מציינים 108 שנים להולדתו של יגאל אלון, מהדמויות המרכזיות בדור המייסדים של מדינת ישראל. אלון היה איש צבא ומדינאי, אבל גם איש חינוך שהאמין שהציונות לא מסתיימת בהקמת מדינה. מבחינתו, המשימה הציונית כללה גם בניית חברה, חינוך, התיישבות, אחריות הדדית ושאיפה לשלום מתוך ביטחון.

המורשת שלו מזכירה לנו שציונות היא לא רק השאלה איך מגינים על המדינה - אלא גם איזו מדינה אנחנו רוצים לבנות.

"Friendship, we bear you with no words" - it is hard to imagine the landscape of Israeli memory without the words of Haim Gouri. Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the birth of Haim Gouri – a poet, an author, a journalist, and a Palmach member whose voice accompanied some of the State of Israel's defining moments.

Gouri belonged to the generation that founded the state, yet his work went beyond mere tales of heroism and victory. He also wrote of pain, loss, responsibility, and the human cost of war. Perhaps this is one of his most significant contributions to Israeli culture: the reminder that even within a grand national story, there must be room for doubt, remembrance, and introspection.

"הרעות נשאנוך בלי מילים" - קשה לדמיין את הזיכרון הישראלי בלי המילים של חיים גורי. היום אנחנו מציינים 103 שנים להולדתו של חיים גורי – משורר, סופר, עיתונאי ואיש הפלמ"ח, שקולו ליווה כמה מהרגעים המכוננים של מדינת ישראל.

גורי היה בן הדור שהקים את המדינה, אבל ביצירתו הוא לא הסתפק רק בסיפור של גבורה וניצחון. הוא כתב גם על כאב, אובדן, אחריות והמחיר האנושי של המלחמה. אולי זו אחת התרומות החשובות שלו לתרבות הישראלית: להזכיר שגם בתוך סיפור לאומי גדול צריך להשאיר מקום לספק, לזיכרון ולחשבון נפש.

Three years have passed since October 7, 2023. Today, we bow our heads in memory of those murdered and fallen, embrace the families bearing this pain, and remember all those whose lives were changed that morning. Since that day, alongside the loss and the trauma, we have witnessed time and time again the power of mutual responsibility - within Israeli society, in Jewish communities around the world, and in the bonds forged between them. Remembrance compels us not only to look back but also to continue building a society that is stronger, more responsible, and more united.

שלוש שנים עברו מאז 7 באוקטובר 2023. היום אנחנו מרכינים ראש לזכר הנרצחים והנופלים, מחבקים את המשפחות שנושאות את הכאב, וזוכרים את כל מי שחייהם השתנו באותו בוקר. מאז אותו יום, לצד האובדן והשבר, ראינו שוב ושוב גם את כוחה של הערבות ההדדית - בתוך החברה הישראלית, בקהילות היהודיות ברחבי העולם ובקשרים שנוצרו ביניהן. הזיכרון מחייב אותנו לא רק להביט לאחור, אלא גם להמשיך לבנות כאן חברה חזקה, אחראית וסולידרית יותר.
