Ceantar Scannán Short Documentary Bursary Recipients Announced for 2026 / Faighteoirí Sparántacht Ceantar Scannán Clár Faisnéise Gairid Fógartha do 2026 🎬💚✨

Ardán, as manager of Galway City of Film, is delighted to announce the recipients of the Ceantar Scannán Short Doc Bursary for 2026! / Tá áthas ar Ardán, atá mar bhainisteoir ar Chathair Scannán na Gaillimhe, na faighteoirí do Sparántacht Ceantar Scannán Clár Faisnéise Gairid do 2026 a fhógairt!

The first documentary is ‘Stedi Whidden a Ladu / Whispers on Health with the Land’ by Aoife Ní Mhaoildeirg/ Delaney Reade, Oein DeBhairduin, and Cáit Dwyer, and the second documentary is ‘Getting Lost in the Garden’ by Jamie Costello.

The successful applicants will receive €3,000 to help them make a short documentary of between five and fifteen minutes in duration. Alongside the bursary, the two teams will be mentored by Galway-based filmmaker Donal Haughey of Hawkeye Films.

One of the 2025 Short Doc Bursary teams – Normagh Heaney and Jessie Greene – will be premiering their work ‘Blackrock’ at this year’s Docs Ireland happening later this month! / Beidh ceann de na fóirne ó Sparántacht Clár Faisnéise Gairid 2025 – Normagh Heaney agus Jessie Greene – ag cur a gcuid oibre ‘Blackrock’ i láthair ag Docs Ireland na bliana seo níos déanaí sa mhí!

Comhghairdeas mhór to the team behind behind Learning to Breathe Underwater as it makes its world premiere at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and its Irish premiere at Galway Film Fleadh this July! ✨🎬💚

Filmed in Galway in 2025 – and starring Rory Kinnear, Maria Bakalova and Ezra Carlisle – Learning to Breathe Under Water follows an eight-year-old boy as he navigates life after the death of his mother while his father swings between manic creativity and debilitating anxiety. The arrival of a Bulgarian au pair brings unexpected changes to the household.

The film is directed by Rebekah Fortune from a script by Richard Barbin. The project is produced by Jack Tarling of the UK’s Shudder Films and Patrick O’Neill of Ireland’s Wildcard, co-produced by KeyFilm in the Netherlands, One Wave Films in Wales and made in association with Éiru Films and Finite Films.

Learning to Breathe Under Water is proudly supported by WRAP Fund, alongside Fís Éireann/ Screen Ireland, BFI Global Screen Fund, Ffilm Cymru, Netherlands Film Fund, Finite Films, Bankside Films, Three Point Capital, Kamila Serkabaeva and Dias Feld.
