Galway Simon Community

Galway Simon Community Providing support and accommodation services to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon since 1979.

Our vision is a community where everyone has a place to call home. Galway Simon Community was set up in 1979 by a group of volunteers who refused to accept homelessness on the streets of Galway. With the support of the wider community, we have grown, developed, learned and adapted over the years to become a leading provider of homeless and homelessness prevention services in the region. At Galway

Simon Community, we support a person’s right to security, dignity and wellbeing in their own home. We are relentlessly committed to finding answers to the questions faced by real people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness. It is our belief that early intervention is the most effective means of reducing the trauma and cost associated with homelessness. We work with a clear vision in mind: A community where everyone has a place to call home. Registered Charity No. 20018962

This October, Galway businesses are invited to take part in Sleep Out for Simon. ⬇

By giving up the comfort of your bed for just one night, your team can help raise vital funds for Galway Simon's Essentials Fund, supporting people and families at risk of homelessness across the West.
Homelessness is affecting more people than ever before, but with the right support at the right time, it can often be prevented.

Could your workplace take on the challenge?

One Night. One Purpose. 🌙

On Friday, 2 October, workplaces, clubs and community groups across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon will come together for Sleep Out for Simon. By giving up the comfort of a bed for one night, participants will raise vital funds for Galway Simon Community’s Essentials Fund, providing practical, immediate support to people facing homelessness or at risk of losing their home.

Sometimes, the support that makes a real difference can be surprisingly simple: a bus fare to get to an important appointment, a prescription that can’t wait, or help with a heating bill when money’s already stretched too far. These small interventions can make a big difference, helping someone through a difficult moment before it becomes a crisis.

You may have passed James in Eyre Square with a bag by his side, noticed him sitting quietly in a café while making a cup of tea last for hours, or walked past him in Galway City long after most people had gone home. At the time, you may not have realised he was homeless, and for a long time, James didn’t fully realise it either. ⬇️

Homelessness rarely happens all at once. For James, it happened gradually through nights on sofas, floors, temporary places to stay and favours that could only last so long, until eventually there was nowhere left to go.

This summer, we’re asking for your support to help reach other young people like James before they reach that point. Please donate to Galway Simon Community’s Summer Appeal today and help make sure a young person experiencing homelessness is seen before there is nowhere left to turn: https://galwaysimon.ie/appeal/

Not sure where to start? ⬇

Finding the right addiction support can feel overwhelming, especially when you're unsure what options are available or what type of treatment might be right for you.
Galway Simon Community's Treatment Options & Access Platform is here to help.

You don't need to have all the answers before reaching out. We can help you understand the treatment and support options available and explore what might work for you.
The first step can simply be asking a question.

Behind every statistic is a young person trying to build a future; a young person who wants to finish school, start a career, gain independence, and feel part of their community.

Homelessness can place enormous barriers in the way of these goals. The stress and uncertainty of not having a stable home affects every aspect of daily life, from education and employment to health and wellbeing.
This is why early intervention and dedicated support matter.

With your support, young people experiencing homelessness can access the stability, guidance, and opportunities they need to move forward with confidence. By giving monthly, you're helping ensure that young people experiencing homelessness can access the consistent support they need to build lasting stability and work towards their future. 💛

Our recent Art Therapy Day Out brought clients together for a day of creativity, collaboration and fun. 💛

Guided by Kate O'Sullivan, Art Therapist, clients worked side-by-side on a shared art project, discovering the power of creative expression while building connections, confidence and a sense of community along the way.
There was plenty of conversation, laughter and inspiration as the artwork took shape, resulting in a beautiful piece that reflected the group's collective talents, creativity and shared experience.

A heartfelt thank you to Galway City Council and Creative Ireland for funding this programme and helping make opportunities like this possible. Their support enables meaningful experiences that promote creativity, inclusion and wellbeing for those we work with.

✨ Swipe through to see some of the creativity, teamwork and joy that made the day so special!

Homelessness can make even ordinary plans feel impossible. 👇🏼

Getting to work on time, keeping up with college, washing clothes, eating properly or making an appointment all become harder when so much time and energy is spent managing where to go next. It isn’t a lack of ambition or effort: when someone is living from one temporary arrangement to another, immediate needs naturally take priority over longer-term plans.

Support from our community helps young people move beyond simply getting through the day and begin thinking about what comes next.

We're always inspired by the generosity and community spirit shown by young people who choose to give their time to help others. 💛

A huge thank you to the Celtic Irish American Academy Class of 2026 for supporting Galway Simon Community during your time in Galway. Through the Celtic Challenge, the group took on everything from volunteering projects at the Circle of Life Park and the grounds of St Enda’s College to trekking Diamond Hill, embracing sea dips at Blackrock, and raising funds through book sales and donations.
Every hour volunteered and every euro raised helps us work towards our vision of a community where everyone has a place to call home.

Thank you for your hard work, positivity, and commitment to making a difference. We hope you enjoyed your time in Galway and wish you every success in the future as you return home to the United States and Canada. 💫
