Wishing a very happy retirement to our former Educate Together national office colleague Fionnuala Ward! 🎉 Fionnuala writes in today's Irish Times:

It’s the ultimate cliche, but it’s the kids I’ll miss the most, and their ability to say it as it is

"On a narrow footpath off Dublin’s Sandymount Strand on Thursday, Angela Hawkins wielded a lollipop stop sign, patrolling morning traffic as she welcomed back the 300 or so pupils of Shellybanks Educate Together National School.

It is a landmark year for the school. In June, its new premises opened for business – a two-storey building equipped with brand new classrooms, a sports hall, library, sensory room and yard space. There are new, tailored facilities for three autism classes. It marks a big upgrade on the prefabs they had been occupying while the development was carried out."

📢 “For decades politicians and Department officials alike have dismissed parents seeking school choice.” – Dr Emer Nowlan, Educate Together CEO.

Today, our CEO Emer Nowlan published a powerful piece in The Irish Times on where we stand after the recent Primary School Survey.

The data are clear: Across pre-school and primary school parents, 45% want non-religious schools, but Ireland’s schools don’t reflect that choice.

While we welcome the survey as a major step, we are concerned about what happens next. We are seeing misinformation spreading about what a change of patronage means, and we are frustrated that the State is leaving the “vindication of people’s rights to volunteerism alone.”

🏫 We need your help. If you believe every child should feel an equal sense of belonging in school, read Emer’s article and share your thoughts below. We need to keep the momentum going for real change!

If we are serious about every child feeling a sense of belonging in school this needs investment and political leadership

🌟 Over 50 years of change — and it started with one school!

Meet Áine Hyland, a founder member of the very first Educate Together school – the Dalkey School Project. Over 50 years ago, a group of parents saw a need for a place where children of all religions and none could learn side by side, with equal rights of access ⚖️

Now, she’s “absolutely delighted” to see how Educate Together has grown – but the demand is still rising 📈
