This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact of our volunteers. 💛

Volunteers across the country play a vital role in supporting people affected by heart disease and stroke, giving their time, compassion and connection to those who need it most. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to every one of you.

We’re also proud to spotlight Catherine, one of our dedicated Community Group Volunteers in Dundalk. Through her role with her local Stroke Support Group, she helps create a welcoming space where people can share experiences and support one another.

“We’re one big happy family… it’s a safe space for everyone to talk and share their experiences.”

Thank you Catherine and thank you to all our volunteers for the difference you make.

Today is World Hypertension Day and for many people, high blood pressure comes without any warning signs.

Rebecca Fitzsimons, 71, a retired French and English teacher from Clontarf in Dublin was very active and generally felt well. She had no symptoms, no warning signs and no reason to think anything was wrong. So when a GP check-up revealed she had high blood pressure, it came as a complete shock.

“I had nothing. I didn’t even get a headache, and I’m very active,” she says.

High blood pressure is often called the silent killer because it can have no symptoms. But it can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other serious conditions.

Rebecca’s first reading was borderline high. A follow-up appointment with her GP a month later confirmed the diagnosis.

Instead of ignoring it, she decided to take action.

She made simple but important lifestyle changes; losing weight, improving her sleep, avoiding late-night eating and switching to a Mediterranean-style diet.

Over time, those changes brought her blood pressure back to normal.

Now, Rebecca is encouraging others to get their blood pressure checked.

“I don’t want a sudden stroke. It’s the silent killer. I would be delighted if somebody could be alerted and say, ‘maybe I should get that checked’.”

Her story reflects a wider issue, many people in Ireland may have high blood pressure without even knowing it.

The reality is simple: you won’t know unless you get it checked.

✅ It’s quick
✅ It’s easy
✅ It could save your life

👉 Looking after your blood pressure starts with a simple check.

Sharon Butler, Patient Champion for the Irish Heart Foundation, rebuilt her life after surviving a heart attack in 2019. Sharon’s heart attack occurred unexpectedly on her 46th birthday, beginning with what she assumed was indigestion but later learned was a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. Sharon has gone on to make a strong recovery. Her experience highlights the importance of recognising warning signs which can differ in women and the importance of support in navigating life after a cardiac event. ‘I was anxious, not sleeping, and didn’t want to burden anyone. I felt very alone.’ ‘I know how lonely it can feel. But there is support. And there is hope’.

Maura Canning, Patient Ambassador for the Irish Heart Foundation, discovered her dangerously high blood pressure during a routine check with the Foundation’s Mobile Health Unit. “It was a wake-up call to prioritise my health. I now do bootcamp classes, meditation classes, and country dancing in my local area. It’s not only enjoyable but I know my health is much better for it. I would encourage everyone to get involved in this challenge.”
