Thank you for standing with people with asthma. 💙

A week on from Budget 2027, we want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who helped make the case for better asthma care.

📣 To everyone who contacted their local TD: thank you for taking the time to speak up and make sure the experience of people living with asthma was part of the Budget conversation.

🤝 To the TDs and Senators who met with us: thank you for giving your time, listening to the challenges faced by people with asthma and engaging with our calls for better access to treatment and care.

🩺 To the clinicians who supported our Pre-Budget Submission and our call for free MART for 12–17-year-olds: thank you for adding your expertise and voice to the campaign.

And to everyone living with asthma and the families supporting them, thank you for continuing to share your experiences and for helping us make the case for change.

There has been real momentum behind the call for more affordable access to asthma medication, including free MART for young people.

Budget Day may have passed, but our work continues.

We’ll keep working with people with asthma, clinicians, politicians, and policymakers to push for better access to the medication and care people need, regardless of their ability to pay.

🏆 We’ve been shortlisted for a national award!

We’re delighted to announce that the Asthma Society of Ireland has been shortlisted for the 2026 Charities Institute Ireland People’s Choice Award.

Every day, we work to support people with asthma and their families, provide trusted information and support, campaign for better asthma care, and make sure the voices of people with asthma are heard.

Budget 2027: we’ve made progress – and we’re not stopping. 💙

Our advocacy has helped put asthma and respiratory health firmly on the agenda, and there are important wins to celebrate in Budget 2027.

✅ More investment in community care – helping bring care closer to home.
✅ More diagnostic activity – including expanded evening and weekend services, supporting earlier access to testing.
✅ Progress on vaccination – including enhanced flu vaccine reimbursement for people aged 65+ and RSV immunisation for infants.

We also welcome measures to support warmer, more energy-efficient homes and action on to***co, ni****ne, and va**ng.

But there is more to do.

The Government has missed an opportunity to make MART inhalers free for children aged 12–17 – the central recommendation of our Pre-Budget Submission.

Our campaign has built real momentum, with the issue raised in the Oireachtas thanks to strong support from political representatives, clinical experts, and people with asthma.

💙 Thank you to everyone who contacted their TDs and helped make the case for change. Your voices made a difference.

We’ll keep pushing for free MART, better respiratory diagnostics and a National Respiratory Strategy.

So, what does Budget 2027 mean for people with asthma?

There are some positive steps on to***co, healthier homes and investment in health services.

But affordability of medication - and asthma medication specifically - remains a major barrier, and free MART for young people was a clear opportunity to make a meaningful difference that Government has not taken.

💊 Cost of medication
The DPS threshold remains unchanged for the fifth year. We called for €12.1m to provide free MART inhalers for 12–17-year-olds. MART combines maintenance and reliever medication in a single inhaler and can help reduce asthma attacks, emergency hospital visits and disruption to school and family life.

🩺 Health & asthma care
We welcome €1.6bn in additional funding for the Department of Health, including investment in the HSE workforce and GP services. We look forward to seeing how this supports people living with asthma.

🚭 To***co & va**ng
We welcome higher taxes on ci******es and vapes. But taxation is only part of the solution, we also need properly funded smoking cessation services. We called for an additional €30m to bring annual investment to €50m.

🏠 Warmer, healthier homes
Enhanced retrofit and renewable energy supports can help tackle cold, damp and mould while reducing energy costs, all important for respiratory health.

🚌 Air quality & transport
We remain concerned about planned public transport fare increases. Investment in public and active transport is also an investment in respiratory health.

We’ll continue to push for action so everyone with asthma can access the treatment and support they need, regardless of their ability to pay.
