No child should have to miss out on the best treatment because of cost 💙

That was one of the key issues we discussed with Limerick TD, Willie O'Dea, on Friday, when we met to discuss our 2027 Pre Budget Submission.

We're calling for free MART inhalers, starting with children aged 12-17.

MART can make a real difference to asthma control and help reduce the risk of serious attacks. But treatment only works if families can afford to access it.

We're grateful to Deputy O'Dea for taking the time to meet with us, and we hope to see progress in the months ahead

Ethan has lived with asthma since he was a toddler.

Recently, his mum Aoife noticed he was becoming more breathless while playing rugby and coughing more at night.

Like many parents, she worried.

A call to the Asthma Society's Adviceline changed everything: "Calling the Adviceline wasn't just helpful — it was a lifeline."

Together with one of our respiratory nurses, they reviewed Ethan's symptoms, updated his asthma action plan and gave Aoife the confidence to take the next steps.

"For the first time, I didn't feel rushed," she says.

"I felt heard."

For families like Michelle and Gemma's, asthma isn't just a diagnosis — it's a daily reality.

After a severe asthma attack, Gemma went from being a world champion kickboxer to being afraid to train again. Moving to a MART inhaler has transformed how well her asthma is controlled, but the cost of that treatment continues to place a significant financial strain on the family.

This Budget, we're calling on Government to make Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) free for children aged 12-17 years.

No family should have to worry about whether they can afford the treatment that gives their child the best chance of staying well.

Cost should never stand in the way of breathing.

Budget 2027 is an opportunity to build better asthma care in Ireland.

Today, we've launched our Pre-Budget Submission 2027, setting out the practical, evidence-based investments needed to improve asthma care, prevent avoidable hospitalisations, and save lives.

We are calling on Government to make Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) free for children aged 12-17 years. This would ensure better access to the treatment recommended by national and international clinical guidelines.

We're also calling for investment in:
💙 Better access to respiratory diagnostics
💙 Stronger severe asthma services and a national adult severe asthma registry
💙 Sustainable funding for the Asthma Society's preventative services
💙 Smoking cessation and to***co control
💙 Vaccination programmes
💙 Healthier homes and improved indoor air quality

450,000 people in Ireland have asthma, yet too many continue to experience preventable attacks, hospital admissions and deaths.

Budget 2027 is an opportunity to change that.
