The Ebola outbreak is continuing to spread across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), putting children and families at risk.
Schools are increasing hygiene measures, communities are working to stay informed, and frontline workers are responding urgently, but more support is needed.

In La Paz, Honduras, five generations of one Lenca family have shared more than family ties; they have shared the lifelong burden of carrying water to get by.

But that story is beginning to shift. Through World Vision’s water, sanitation and hygiene programmes, which reach more than 460,000 people across 596 communities in Honduras, access to clean water is becoming closer and more reliable, easing the burden carried by women and girls across generations.

Alongside this, Maria’s four children are all sponsored, opening up new opportunities for their future. A different future is now taking shape, one where this burden does not have to be inherited.

Why is the current Ebola outbreak so difficult to contain? In this series of videos, Chris Montgomery, our roving reporter, explains the key reasons why this particular outbreak is especially challenging to track and respond to.

From previous outbreaks, we’ve learned that an effective Ebola response goes beyond medical treatment. It requires working closely with communities, building trust, sharing accurate information, and strengthening local systems to help stop the spread of the virus and reduce its devastating impact.

During her recent trip to the DRC, our Programmes Manager, Esperanza, shares how the writing clubs, delivered in partnership with Fighting Words as part of the Irish Aid -funded EMPOWER programme, are helping to unlock children’s creativity while building confidence and self-expression. Through storytelling, children are not only strengthening their literacy skills but also finding safe and inspiring spaces to imagine, create, and be heard.

She reflects on the incredible energy and enthusiasm in each session, and on how powerful it is to witness children growing in confidence as they develop their ideas and share their stories with pride, an impact that sits at the heart of the wider EMPOWER programme’s goal of supporting access to quality education.

🎥 Watch Esperanza share how this partnership is helping children in the DRC discover their voices and shape brighter futures through EMPOWER.

Recently, Brenda Mockler, our Head of HR & Governance, visited the Kakheti Area Development Centre in eastern Georgia. She was struck by how familiar the challenges felt, especially when it comes to supporting children and young people. From early childhood development and parenting supports to youth programmes and services for children with additional needs, Brenda saw priorities that closely mirror those in communities across Dublin.

“Parents there worry about the same things Irish parents do, education, development and future opportunities, but with far fewer resources,” she said.

Her visit highlighted a powerful truth: while contexts may differ, families everywhere share the same hopes for their children: to learn, grow and thrive."

Our Policy and Programmes Director, Maurice Sadlier, returned to the DRC three years on to see the impact of the Irish Aid -funded EMPOWER programme first-hand. His visit offered a powerful insight into how sustained investment in education and community engagement is helping to drive lasting change for children and their families.

One of the most meaningful signs of progress, he shares, is the way communities have truly taken ownership of the initiative. From supporting children’s attendance in school to championing the value of education at a local level, this sense of ownership is helping to create an environment where more children can learn, thrive, and build brighter futures.

Maurice reflects on the importance of working alongside communities to ensure solutions are locally led and sustainable, an approach that sits at the heart of the EMPOWER programme’s mission to improve access to quality education.

🎥 Watch Maurice share what he witnessed on the ground and why community ownership is key to lasting change through EMPOWER.

To mark World Bee Day, we’re sharing the story of Mwinyi Selemani from Jaira village in Pangani District, Tanzania.

Through our ARDHI Tanga project, funded by the European Union, Mwinyi received beekeeping and mindset training that helped him turn a long-held dream into reality.

Starting with just a few traditional hives, he went on to form the Mradi Wetu (“Our Project”) group with fellow community members. Today, 22 members manage 60 beehives, producing honey that is improving household incomes, supporting children’s education, and strengthening resilience across the community.

What began as a personal aspiration has grown into a thriving community enterprise, showing how beekeeping can create opportunities that benefit both people and the planet.

This World Bee Day, we celebrate the essential role bees play in sustaining ecosystems, and the communities building stronger futures through them. 🐝💛

As the Education Cannot Wait programme in Myanmar comes to an end this year, we’re reflecting on the incredible impact it has had for these children living through conflict and crisis.

Over the past three years, more than 16,000 children have been supported with access to education, safe learning spaces, school meals, reading clubs, and psychosocial support, helping them not only stay in school but also feel safe, supported, and hopeful for the future.
