Today, we're bringing you a remarkable and innovative project from down in Cork - Ireland's very first Living Seawalls! 🐚
In September 2025, at Kennedy Pier in Cobh, a team from University College Cork installed a collection of concrete structures. These Living Seawalls have since become a home to a variety of aquatic dwellers - the Seawall functions just as the bug hotels we're familiar on land.
If you are in Cobh and would like to see the Living Seawalls and try to spot some of their residents, remember they are only visible at low tide. 🌊
So, what happens next? Researchers at UCC will monitor the installation and how it performs in the south coast climate. If successful, this approach could serve as a model for more installations, in Ireland and beyond! Community engagement is also a core tenet of the project. Schools, groups and citizen scientists are all invited to partake in monitoring and educational activities, while the Living Seawall itself doubles as a public resource, connecting us to the marine environment. 🪸
