179 deer have been shot at Portumna Forest Park since the start of 2024, according to records reported by the Connacht Tribune 💔

Coillte says they were eating saplings. After a deer survey in 2025, the state forestry company stepped up the culls: 25 deer killed in 2024, 92 in 2025, and 62 more in just the first nine weeks of this year. A game dealer does the shooting with a .270 r***e.

Deer-proof fencing would protect the trees, and we believe it would cost less too. Either way, it would save their innocent lives that are being taken for no good reason!

MAJOR REVEAL: Irish universities are paying for animal experiments overseas, where Ireland’s regulator can’t see them.🚨

A Journal Investigates report found 17 studies commissioned by the University of Galway and RCSI in the US, India, Malaysia and the UK since 2020. Swipe to see what the records show:

🐇 Rabbits: contract documents planned to block the veins in their eyes with dye and lasers, then kill them and remove their eyes.
🐭 Chinchillas: both eardrums deliberately perforated. Two died. Others developed infections, head tilt and severe weight loss.
🐑 Sheep: plans to surgically remove their ovaries to induce menopause, then kill them for tissue.
🐁 Mice: skin repeatedly compressed between magnets. Three died under anaesthesia.

The University of Galway alone paid over €417,000 to overseas organisations involved in animal research. State agencies including Enterprise Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland are named as funders on some of these projects.

Because the experiments happened abroad, Ireland’s regulator had no oversight, the animals are left out of Irish testing figures, and both universities refused to release records on how many animals were used or died. Coincidence? 🤔

SHOCKING NEWS! 💔

179 deer have been shot dead in Portumna Forest Park since the start of 2024, as revealed in the Connacht Tribune.

The deaths even include fawns just months old. 🥀

This shocking number is not only heartbreaking, but evidences an escalation in violence against animals whose only ‘crime’ is living in a Forest Park where a management strategy of bullets is preferred to fences.

Records released under Freedom of Information show the killing is speeding up. 25 deer were shot in 2024. Then Coillte, the state-owned forestry company, ramped up “management activity” and 92 were shot in 2025. Another 62 were killed in just the first nine weeks of this year.
The reason? Deer were eating tree saplings. Coillte’s application to the NPWS put it plainly: “It is proposed to kill the animals.”

This is utterly unacceptable.

NARA Founder, Laura Broxson said in response: “It is absolutely disgraceful that Coillte is consistently, successfully, applying to kill all deer present – including young calves – and even more disgraceful that the NPWS is granting them permission”
