Have you ever wondered whether workable alternatives to neoliberalism exist?!

Our team had a great time last week working through answers to this question with a lively group of global citizenship education practitioners.

We partnered with our friends at Irish Development Education Association - IDEA and the Centre for Global Education to deliver last week’s training, ‘There is No Alternative or is there? We need to talk about economics in GCE’.

Helping us find alternative economic models were four brilliant speakers: Meaghan Carmody, Oisín Gilmore, Dr. Conor McCabe, and Davie Philip. Each helped us see clearly the social and ecological limits of neoliberal capitalism, while pointing us toward different economic relations that better support human flourishing.

And thank you to all the participants from the GCE sector who bravely dived into thinking critically and creatively about how we can work collectively towards economic justice.

Our Director, Hilary Darcy, joins the Irish Schools Sustainability Network - ISSN and the ESCI (Education Support Centres Ireland) this Wednesday for a 7pm webinar introducing Donut Panic! - our new resource on Doughnut Economics and a Just Transition.

The session will empower teachers to bring this material into their classrooms and to support students' interests in climate change and an economy that works within our planetary boundaries.

Our team had brilliant chats with loads of teachers at the LCA National Association's Task Workshop last weekend.

We met with a great group of teachers at St.Seton’s in Ballyfermot to learn how best to support the teaching of economic justice in classrooms.

It always matters a lot to us to meet directly with teachers so we can best understand classroom conditions, their needs as educators, and their students' needs.

“Europe cannot afford another missed opportunity”: Financial Justice Ireland calls for action on fossil fuel profits

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil calls for EU windfall tax proposals by October as France raises questions over the fair distribution of multinational tax revenues.

Financial Justice Ireland is calling on the Irish Government to seize the opportunity for global financial justice as EU Finance Ministers gather in Dublin today and tomorrow, 18th & 19th September.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has called on the European Commission to present proposals for taxing fossil fuel windfall profits by October, following a joint request from six EU countries.

Meanwhile, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure has questioned whether Ireland’s substantial tax revenues from technology multinationals should be more fairly distributed across Europe, reflecting the profits generated across different countries.

Hilary Darcy, Director of Financial Justice Ireland, said:

“Europe cannot afford another missed opportunity. As households struggle with rising costs and our planet faces accelerating climate and ecological breakdown, governments must confront who profits from these crises and who pays the price.

“Germany’s call for concrete proposals by October is an important opening. Ireland must use its EU Presidency to turn this momentum into action, ensuring that fossil fuel companies contribute fairly to a just transition and international climate finance.

“The French Minister’s intervention also raises a fundamental question: how do we ensure multinational profits are taxed fairly and that the benefits reach the people and countries generating that wealth? These are questions of global justice, not simply European competitiveness.

“The political conversations are happening. Now we need the courage to turn them into meaningful change.”

“This is not a time for business as usual”: Financial Justice Ireland calls for action as EU Finance Ministers meet in Dublin

Financial Justice Ireland is calling on the Irish Government to put global financial justice at the heart of this week’s ECOFIN meeting, as EU Finance Ministers gather in Dublin on 18 - 19 September amid escalating climate and ecological breakdown, deepening inequality, and a continuing cost-of-living crisis.

Financial Justice Ireland is adding its voice to a joint call from more than 30 Irish and European civil society organisations urging Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris to put fossil fuel profit taxation on the ECOFIN agenda and advance a fair European framework that can help finance a just transition and international climate action and support households and public services.

Hilary Darcy, Director of Financial Justice Ireland, said:

“We are living through climate and ecological breakdown while enormous wealth and profits continue to be generated from the activities driving that crisis. This is not a time for business as usual.

“Economic policy is never separate from climate justice, inequality or people’s everyday lives. Through its EU Presidency, Ireland has an opportunity to show bold leadership and help put tax justice, climate justice and the principle that polluters should pay firmly on the European agenda.

“The question facing Europe is not whether we can afford ambitious action. It is whether, in the face of mounting human and ecological costs, we can afford not to act.”

We are excited to announce the return of our Culture Night walking tour of Dublin's International Financial Services Centre!

Join Financial Justice Ireland for a walking tour of Dublin's Docklands to explore how the financial district drives ecological breakdown. We will guide a lively walking tour that blends protest and performance at the heart of the city’s financial district.

Together, we will discover how the IFSC is playing an outsized role in setting our planet ablaze with wildfires, guzzling fossil fuels with dirty investments, and diverting clean energy into limitless data centre expansion.

Our speakers will invite us to consider how these interlocking crises can be resisted by illuminating pathways toward a just transition that places human flourishing and well-being ahead of profit, growth-at-all-costs economic thinking, and ecological devastation.

Featuring a wide range of brilliant speakers and timely perspectives, this is a tour not to simply attend but to join. Expect to walk, question, and sing!

Our tour begins at 5pm, Friday September 18th at the James Connolly Memorial Statue, opposite Liberty Hall. We will finish at 7pm.
