A gym for stroke survivors in Cork has been hailed as 'life changing' amid calls for more rehab support.

Research by Cork Stroke Support and Rethink Ireland has shown that exercise is absolutely crucial for recovery but a new report has found that services are not up to par.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in Ireland, impacting tens of thousands of people across the country, and these cases are expected to increase by more than 50% over the next two decades.

Yet the gym at the Cork Stroke Supports office in Blackrock is the only dedicated gym for stroke survivors in Munster.

The rehabilitation programme provides a safe, supportive environment where people can rebuild strength, confidence, independence and hope, with physio Sarah Slattery revealing that 96% of users feel stronger and more confident.

With those results, Sarah says it's clear that Ireland needs more rehab gyms.

She said: "The cost-benefit, to the state and HSE, of keeping stroke survivors off the floor, out of A&E and out-patient clinics, and in their homes living independently as long as possible, cannot be understated."

Great to be involved and to see the wider roll out of the hugely successful Down Memory Lane project/ show. It will perform in all 10 Cork city libraries across May.

Now in its 5th year, Down Memory Lane features singer Linda Kenny, comedian/raconteur P***e O’Callaghan, and entertainer-extraordinaire Maurice Healy on vocals/piano, who will take audiences on a nostalgic trip through song, story and laughter.

The performers will be joined at each venue by a special guest, either Conor ‘The Loungeman’ O’Shea, or showband legend Art Supple.

They guarantee 75 minutes of memories, fun, banter, and singalong.

And best of all, the show is 100% free, with seats offered on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

Down Memory Lane events run from Saturday May 16 to Friday May 29, 2026.
