7th Wigan Squirrels: Revolution

Super Chef Badge pt. 2👩‍🍳
This session was all about following instructions. We had a fully adapted list of instructions to help us make cornflake and cocopop cakes.

The Squirrels did a great job of making their cakes and decorating them.

We had our usual obstacle course for when we wanted a break and a colouring table for some peaceful creativity.

Some squirrels just wanted to play outside. They danced together and worked as a team to create a beautiful leaf garland.

Well done Squirrels! 🏆

On my first night at Scouts, I took one look around the room and was sure I didn’t belong.

Everywhere I looked there were big, confident boys in neatly pressed shirts, covered in badges and awards. And then there was me. A tiny, skinny sq**rt who somehow felt even smaller than he looked.

Every part of me wanted to shrink into the corner. These lads clearly had it all figured out, and I clearly didn’t.

Then the scoutmaster set the whole troop a challenge. Cook a sausage using a single match.

Every one of us got the same match. The badges didn’t help anyone, and neither did the pressed shirts. It came down to who was willing to get stuck in and have a go. I loved it. Something in me came alive that night, and I was hooked.

I only understood this years later. What I lacked in size and confidence, I slowly made up for with guts and a refusal to quit. And in the end that mattered far more than looking the part on day one.

Life puts us in rooms like that all the time. A new job, or a group of people who all seem to know exactly what they’re doing. We size everyone up, decide we’re the smallest one there, and start shrinking before anything has even begun.

Most of those people are just as unsure as we are. Some of them have just learned to hide it better.

It’s worth remembering when we’re the ones setting the challenge too, whether that’s running a team or organising a weekend away with mates. Give everyone the same shot, and don’t decide in advance who’s going to shine. The quiet one in the corner might surprise you all.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO OPENING 💚

Some people really do restore your faith in humanity! 🥹

A HUGE thank you to J.J.Landscaping who have incredibly generously offered to donate their time and labour to install the fencing at Juggernauts Park **completely FREE of charge!** 👏

This fencing is so much more than just a boundary. For families of children who have little or no awareness of danger, or who are at risk of running off, a secure outdoor space can mean the difference between being able to play and missing out altogether.

Now we just need your help to raise £2,500 for the materials!💚

Every donation, no matter how small, will help us create a safe, enclosed space where children with additional needs can enjoy the freedom to play, explore and just be children.

And this is only the beginning!

Our long-term dream is to transform this site into a beautiful, fully accessible playground for children with both physical and hidden disabilities. A place where no child is left on the sidelines.

Happy Birthday Squirrels! 🎂
1 whole year of our SEN exclusive scout group has absolutely flown by. Here are some photos from our session celebrating what an incredible year we have had.

Our waiting list has always been very long, and we know there are so many more SEN families who would love the chance to join us.

So during the summer, we pause our usual Squirrels sessions and our leaders come together to help create fun days for the wider SEN community. ❤️

It means more children can enjoy the outdoors, play alongside other families and access some of the resources our Squirrels group has been lucky enough to build up over time.

Everyone helping to make these days happen is a volunteer.

Nobody is paid to be there. In fact, many of our volunteers donate resources, supplies and little extras from their own pockets — simply because they love seeing the children happy, playing and enjoying the outdoors.

These days only happen because people give their time, energy and kindness to make them possible.

And the support they receive from the community is what helps keep them going.

Thank you to every single person who volunteers, donates, shares, supports or simply cheers these events on. ❤️

Seeing the children enjoying themselves makes every bit of it worthwhile.

SEN exclusive coach trip to Southport this Weds 👇

🌳🪵Let's Go Wild!🪵🌳
Join us on the 22nd July for a trip to Wild & Seek in Southport exclusively for SEN families!

Wild & seek is a nature-inspired enclosed outdoor play space. Outside, kids can dive into the mud kitchen, sandpit, hammocks, water wall, play trays, slide, chalkboard, and painting station. Inside, non-walkers can enjoy a cosy area filled with instruments, sensory toys, and more!

There’s also plenty of space for grown-ups to relax, eat, and soak it all in while the little ones play.

We will leave St Anne's Community Centre at 9.20 AM

Wild & Seek session starts at 10 AM

There is a cafe on site.

The Wild & Seek session ends at 11.30am

We will then board the coach and head home.

Entry Fee is £5 per child - no entry fee for adults

Coach is £6.25 per person over 2/anyone requiring a seat - if a child under 2 is using a car seat they require their own seat

We had our England session on Sunday. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏆
We celebrated getting so far in the World Cup and practiced showing support.
Sad that it's over but Well done England!⚽
