An update from Nepal

The devastating floods and landslides in Nepal continue to cause immense suffering, with many families still waiting for news of loved ones.

Samden Sherpa, CITC NGO Director, has shared a further update on the situation on the ground and the continuing search for those who remain missing.

You can read the full update from CITC Chair Mike Hagen, including Samden's account, here:

Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this terrible disaster, including those who have lost loved ones and those still waiting for news.πŸ™

Flash Floods Nepal-Tibet

I know many CITC supporters and others will have looked on in horror as the dramatic scenes on the Nepal-Tibet border are transmitted around the world. A desperate search for survivors is underway following a massive flash flood with homes destroyed, roads swamped and bridges swept away by surging mud and water.

Initially it was believed the disaster was triggered by an earthquake but it now appears it was as a result of a massive glacial collapse and the risk remains high from further flooding.

The areas affected include the Langtang Valley/region and further north to the Tibetan border. Dawa knows this area well and it was somewhere Sarah and I trekked back in 2009. It is to the west of the schools supported by CITC and these schools and teachers have not been directly affected.

The numbers of dead and missing, however, continue to rise and it will take time before the final death toll is known. It will be a shocking figure. Many people in Nepal, including members of the CITC NGO team, have friends and family reported as missing so this is a terrible time for them as they search for news of their loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.

Disasters, sadly, occur in many parts of the world but the extent of the impact on life and property appears directly proportional to the relative poverty of the area. This tragedy is a reminder of the challenges facing a low income country and reminds us why your support is so important in securing a better future for the people in Nepal.

All of us at CITC wish to send our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this disaster. Our commitment to this beautiful country and its amazing people remains firm.

🌟 The Big Give's 'Small Charity Week' campaign is now live, running until 5pm on 29th June 🌟

πŸ’ͺ Help us to raise our target of Β£10,000 which will be DOUBLED to Β£20,000 to support female teachers in rural Nepal through funding awarded by Big Give champion the People's Postcode Lottery!

πŸ“š Situation: In rural Nepal, gender inequality and limited access to education prevent many capable women from pursuing professional teaching careers. Formal qualification routes and testing often disadvantage women, particularly in remote regions such as the Solukhumbu. This results in a shortage of well-trained female teachers and a lack of visible role models for girls in schools.

🎯 Our Campaign: CITC runs a teacher sponsorship programme that identifies motivated women based on character and potential, not formal qualifications alone. We provide structured training, ongoing mentoring and supported teaching roles within local schools, sponsoring up to 30 female teachers at a time. This enables women to build skills, confidence and professional experience, progress towards government teaching exams and secure long-term, sustainable employment.

πŸ™ A big thank you to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School for inviting Dawa in to speak with the Key Stage 2 children.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡΅ He shared insights about life in Nepal and the work of CITC and really enjoyed answering the children’s thoughtful questions and hearing their curiosity about Nepal.

🀝 Matt and his team have worked alongside Dawa for many years and now provide professional pro bono support to Classrooms In The Clouds.

✨ It's inspiring to see how experience from the adventure and outdoor sector is being channelled into educational initiatives that reach remote communitiesπŸ™
