Frozen pipes usually cause the damage on the way back up, not on the way down.

Water expands as it freezes and cracks the pipe. While the ice is still there it plugs the gap. It is when things warm up again that the water starts coming through, which is why a lot of burst pipes show up the morning after a cold snap rather than during it.

Four things worth doing before the first hard frost:

Lag the pipes in your loft, garage and against outside walls.
Find your stop tap now, and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
Fix any dripping taps. A slow drip can freeze and block a pipe.
Insulate the outside tap.

None of it takes long, and all of it is a great deal easier in October than in January.

The most useful thing Phil Gatenby ever learned came from a decorator, years ago, on a job that had gone badly wrong.

"He said there is absolutely nothing in this house that is so broken that we cannot fix it. There is always a way to fix everything, you've just got to take a minute and find it."

"That stuck. When issues crop up now I don't lose my head, because there's going to be a way to fix it. We've just got to figure out what it is."

Phil is one of our senior project managers. His team might complete a hundred appointments in a day, so the job is largely about the one or two that do not go to plan.

Ask him to describe what Aqualogic does in a sentence and he does not reach for anything elaborate.

"Saves water and helps customers."

Today we're in Birmingham for our first Aqua Summit, with managers from across Aqualogic together in one room.

Our teams work right across the country. Some are in the field on leak detection, network maintenance and smart metering. Others run home and business water audits, plan customer appointments and give demand advice. Getting everyone in the same place doesn't happen often, and it matters.

This morning covers where Aqualogic started in 1979, where the business is now and where it's heading. It also covers how Client Services and Water Services work together for the water companies we support. This afternoon is about brand, people and culture. Working groups will look at customer relationships, growth and working as one business, and the day ends with an open Q&A with the leadership team.

The theme for the day is One Aqualogic: thinking differently, delivering together.

Thank you to everyone who has travelled in today, and to the team who put the day together.

Customers ask Phil the same question a lot. Why is my water company giving me this for free?

Phil Gatenby is one of our senior project managers. He started as a water efficiency technician, so he has answered it a few hundred times.

"The last major reservoir in the UK was completed in 1992. In that time the population has grown by more than eleven million. The same fresh water we had then has to go a lot further now."

That is starting to change. Construction began at Havant Thicket in Hampshire in 2023, with completion due by 2029. It will not close the gap on its own.

There is a second reason, and it is the one closer to home.

"Bills go up every year. If you can go into a house and say, your water bill is that high because you've got two leaking toilets consuming the same as another four people living in your house, and the company will fix them for free, why would you not get that done?"

Your loo might be leaking right now, and you would have no idea.

Somewhere between 5 and 8% of toilets in the UK are leaking at any given moment. Not dripping, not overflowing. Just water sliding quietly from the cistern into the bowl, hour after hour, day after day.

Between 215 and 400 litres a day, on Waterwise figures. That is more water than most people use in total.

Here is how to check yours.

Wait until nobody has flushed for half an hour or so. Wipe the back of the pan dry with toilet paper. Then lay a fresh, dry sheet against the back of the bowl, just above the water line, and leave it for a few minutes.

Come back. If the paper is wet, water is getting through.

Most of the time it is a worn flush valve or a seal that has perished, and it is a straightforward fix.

Nationally, leaking toilets account for an estimated 400 million litres a day. Enough to supply around 2.8 million people. Almost all of it from a fault nobody can see or hear.

Worth two minutes of your evening.

Phil Gatenby joined Aqualogic in January 2020 as a water efficiency technician. He is now a senior project manager.

Before that he ran his own plumbing business. What sold him on the job was not the job description, it was what the work took away.

"We're literally just trying to stop leaks, we're trying to fix things, and it's all totally free. I can go in, do the work, and I don't have to say right, you owe me this at the end of it."

Small repairs are the ones that get left. A dripping tap or a leaking toilet is rarely worth a call-out charge to the customer, and rarely worth the trip for the plumber. So they run, sometimes for years. Take the charge away and the job gets done.

"There was a customer with a wobbly tap. She said she'd had it for years and no plumber would come and fix it. It took two seconds. She was over the moon."

If your water company offers you a free water saving visit, it is worth saying yes.

Here is what actually happens. Someone comes to your home, looks at where the water is going, checks the things that quietly waste it, and fits what will help. Flow regulators, aerators, cistern devices, a new shower head if the old one is pouring. It takes about an hour and there is nothing to pay.

The reason it is free is that your water company is paying for it. Reducing how much water everyone uses is one of the things they are measured on, so a visit that brings down a metered bill saves them water at the same time. Both sides win, which is unusual enough to be worth saying.

We have been carrying out these visits for UK water companies since 2007.

One thing worth knowing. If an invitation arrives and you are not certain it is genuine, ring your water company and ask them directly. Any real programme will be happy to confirm it, and a good one would rather you checked.

Two new plumbers joined our field team this week. Marious and Anthony are starting on the Water's Worth Saving programme with Essex & Suffolk Water, part of the Northumbrian Water Group.

Thanks to Rebecca Richards, Water Efficiency Analyst, for joining the induction and spending time with the team.

Induction covers health and safety and our IT systems, then moves on to the core of the role: water efficiency visits in customers' homes.

On each visit, the team helps customers understand how they use water, suggests simple changes, fits water-saving devices and fixes leaking toilets.

It's practical, face-to-face work, and it's a big part of how we help water companies reduce demand: one household at a time.

Welcome to the team, Marious and Anthony.

Three people, three different parts of the business, asked what they actually like about the job.

"I enjoy being able to offer customers the chance to help them save water and money."
Client Services

"I enjoy the challenge and the problem solving; no two days are the same and there's always more to learn."
Water Services

"I'm part of a supportive and friendly team, and we're all working towards the same goal."
Support Services

Nobody said anything about water conservation being a calling. They said the work is interesting, the people are decent, and there is always more to learn. That is usually a better sign.

We are growing across the UK, and we would rather bring someone in and train them properly than hire bad habits. A lot of our supervisors and project managers started in field roles.

No roles open at the moment, but register your interest and we will keep you in mind.

Term is back, and ten Cambridgeshire schools now have smart water monitoring keeping an eye on things.

Schools in England waste an estimated 74 million litres of water a day, most of it through hidden leaks in old pipework. Nothing dramatic, and nobody's fault. A school building simply does not have anyone watching the water while the corridors are empty.

Sorting Water in Schools is led by Watergate and funded through the Water Efficiency Cambridgeshire Fund, with WRc independently checking the results. Our engineers install the sensors, investigate the alerts and carry out the repairs.

Monitoring shows you where the water is going. Engineering is what stops it.
