8 years ago today we opened our very first James' Place centre in Liverpool offering free, life-saving and quick-to-access therapy to men in suicidal crisis.
It was the start of an incredible journey which has led us to open three more centres - in Birmingham, London and Newcastle - and help over 5,100 suicidal men to date.

Here's some of our fantastic Liverpool team in the garden at our centre on Catharine Street 💙 Special shout out to our wonderful Principal Su***de Prevention Therapist Claire LaRoc MBACP, BAATN who joined us not long after we started and also celebrates 8 years with us this year.

Sharing 52 year old Ian's story for Men's Health Week. Ian experienced a suicidal crisis after a series of physical health problems caused his mental health to worsen. 👇

“I’ve had a lot of health problems in the past including heart attacks and cancer. I’ve had to be awake during some traumatic operations and have often not felt listened to by doctors. This has left me with a lot of anxiety about my health, every time I have a headache it’s a brain tumour.

I never really talked about how I was feeling with anyone, even though I have an amazing wife and lots of friends, I didn’t feel I could tell them what was happening, I was a typical man and masked it. The feelings were getting worse and worse. I just couldn’t handle them anymore and I made an attempt on my life. Luckily I had sent a text to my sister beforehand and she contacted the police who took me to hospital.

I spoke to the crisis team who told me about James’ Place and two days later I was sat in front of my amazing therapist in their Newcastle centre. We got on like a house on fire. I saw her twice in the first week following my attempt and twice the second week, then went down to once a week. I looked forward to going to James’ Place, my wife would come with me to the appointments, she loved sitting in the waiting area with a coffee, and then on the way home I’d tell her what I spoke about.

I told my therapist everything in my head and just getting all the bad stuff out there helped me get some of it out of my mind, and made it easier to explain to others too.

Now I’m much better at talking to my family and friends. I tell everyone about James’ Place and I’m doing a fundraiser for them. I don’t want anyone to feel the way I did and not get help.”

Thank you Ian for sharing your story (and this epic photo! 💪) 💙

Some of the men in suicidal crisis that come to James' Place can be resistant to getting help at first. They aren't sure if we will be able to help them, or that talking about their situation with a therapist will make it better. Many feel undeserving of any help, believing there's other people worse off than them, that they should be able to fix their problems themselves. Many are still going through the motions of their daily life, going to work, looking after kids, whilst experiencing intense and distressing suicidal thoughts.

Our therapists are non-judgemental - we've helped thousands of men age 18 to 80+, from a wide range of backgrounds, with lots of different life experiences that have led them to a crisis point. Many have never experienced any issues with their mental health before. We see men very quickly, establish trust, and get to the heart of what is causing the crisis and how to practically get out of it.

If you're finding reasons not to reach out for help, that's very common. We would urge you to give it a go. We have helped men just like you before. We know what we do works.
