Our final spotlight is on Jasmine’s Out of Thin Blue Air. The story of this comic takes place from the perspective of someone in the future looking back on their life before, when the flooding came, and back to the ‘present’, our future.
Flood facts: Sea level rise does not stop in 2100. Because the oceans and ice sheets respond slowly, sea levels will keep rising for centuries even after emissions fall. Some coastal change is now committed rather than avoidable.
What gets lost is not only buildings. Objects carry family history. Research on displacement consistently finds that the loss of possessions, place and routine is what people grieve longest.

It’s the last day of and this morning’s spotlight, Adam’s ‘Prophecies and Pearls’, intends to acknowledge the inevitably of change, and how the most menial of decisions can alter the fate of the environment around us.
Flood facts: Sandbags do not keep water out of your house. Water seeps straight through them, and the sand leaks out of the seams. The Environment Agency’s own position is that sandbags are “relatively ineffective when compared to purpose-built flood protection products”. The 2008 Pitt Review, after the 2007 floods, said the same thing.
What does work is a combination of: resistance – flood doors, barriers, airbrick covers, non-return valves on drains – and resilience, meaning changes inside that let a flooded house dry out and be repaired fast. Today we’re spotlighting an excerpt of Fatimah’s ‘Visions of the Future’. In Fatimah’s words: The idea for this comic came from trying to imagine a dark (but fictional!) future of urban areas considering that, whilst there are human-made predictions, there is no one certain way the earth is going to look in the far future. At the same time, I would like to think we are capable of saving ourselves from a dreadful fate and so wanted an intergalactic messenger to be the bringer of bad news, but also highlight the powerful and fate-changing possibility of hope’.

Ruth Toner’s Deluge tells the story of Nina preparing her house for a flood when her cat, Minnow, spots something watching them from just beyond the water’s edge. Can their little home withstand the oncoming water?
Inspired by the FloodMobile, ‘Deluge’ tells the story of a woman using real and effective flood defenses to prepare for a flood, and something else…
Flood Facts: The wellies on the table legs are Flood Mary’s idea, and they are not a joke. Standing furniture legs in wellington boots is a free, ten-second way to keep a table or sofa out of shallow floodwater. It is one of the strategies Mary Long-Dhonau demonstrates in the FloodMobile.
The thing in the toilet is a toilet b**g. Contaminated floodwater can come up through the drains as well as in through the door. Bungs, non-return valves and airbrick covers close off the routes people forget.
The barrier across the door is a flood gate or door barrier. Fitted properly, it is one way to genuinely hold water back – unlike sandbags.
Signing up for flood warnings is free and takes a few minutes. Over 1.6 million people already get them by text, email or phone.

Next ‘Rising Voices’ spotlight for is on 𓆤𓆐’s ‘The Pluge’ : ‘My comic begins with the failed delivery of a sump pump, likely a rather unfamiliar piece of machinery to most of us. The sump pump – or submersible pump – is an invaluable tool for the protection of homes during flooding, equipped with a powerful little motor to suck up and spit out water pooling in basements or ground floors. If installed effectively the pump can protect a property, and all its beloved contents, against irreversible damage; so, if you’re at any risk at all of flooding, it’s a machine worth familiarising yourself with!

Though my story follows an urgent scramble for flood prevention tools, my focus is on the human aspect of these circumstances befalling a population. We are all too aware of the fear and selfishness sparked by the impact of recent global crises. As we face uncertain futures, what must we change about our approach? What can we learn from our past mistakes?
There is no workable defence against environmental catastrophe without community, mutual aid, and care; and as we have proved time and time again, we are at our best as a species when we come together to pull each other through. This is the spirit I hope to champion with my story: love your neighbours, support your communities, find hope in the face of adversity!

But when the authorities imprison them in the name of control, the waters begin to rise. As the city edges toward destruction, activists and local communities come together to set the birds free, demonstrating the importance of community action.
