🌟 Happy Volunteers' Week! 🌟

This week, we're celebrating our incredible Inspired Reading Volunteers.

Every week, they generously give their time to support children across our local communities, helping them develop not only their reading skills, but also their confidence, self-esteem and love of learning.

Through patience, encouragement and kindness, our volunteers make a lasting difference to the lives of the children they mentor. Their dedication helps young readers believe in themselves and achieve things they never thought possible.

📚✨ The Johnson Foundation Children’s Book Appeal 2026 is back for its fifth year! ✨📚

This summer, we’re once again asking our wonderful community to help us inspire a love of reading in local children.
Our Inspired Reading programme is currently supporting groups of 6 and 7 year olds — and for some children, the book they receive through this appeal may be the very first book they can call their own.
If you have any new or nearly new children’s books at home that are no longer being read, we would love to give them a new home and help spark a summer full of stories and imagination!

📍 Donations can be dropped off at:
Egerton House, 2 Tower Road, Birkenhead, CH41 1FN
(Book Appeal collection box located in Reception)

📅 Final donations accepted by Monday 22nd June.

✨ Mayor’s Visit to Manor Primary School ✨

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral to Manor Primary School to see our Inspired Reading Programme in action.

The visit highlighted the incredible impact of our volunteer Reading Mentors, who provide one-to-one support for pupils from Years 2–Year 6, helping to build confidence, improve literacy, and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Since launching in 2020, the programme has supported over 600 children across 10 local primary schools — all thanks to our amazing volunteers and school partners.

As the Mayor shared, this initiative is truly “changing lives by opening doors to opportunity and building self-belief.”

A huge thank you to our mentors, staff, and pupils who made the visit so special 💙📚

An inspiring evening at the GB Power Hockey Association taster session at Pensby High School.

Two of our Johnson Foundation trustees, Chris and Annie, were there to see the impact of the Foundation’s recent grant towards two power hockey chairs – helping open up opportunities for more people to take part in this incredible, inclusive sport.

✨ A wonderful afternoon at our Inspired Reading Christmas Mingle last Friday!
We were delighted to be joined by the fabulous Year 3 Choir, who serenaded us with Christmas carols (complete with some brilliant dancing!).

A huge thank you to the team at .est21chaptertwo and .cc (Wallasey Village Library) for providing the beautiful food and gorgeous venue once again.

It was the perfect chance to catch up with our incredible Volunteer Reading Mentors and round off the year in style. 🎄✨

📚✨ Today we hosted our annual Inspired Reading Summer Soirée — a special celebration to thank our dedicated Reading Mentor volunteers who generously give their time each week to support our local primary school children with their reading journey.

Held at the beautiful Wallasey Village Library and Community Centre with delicious food provided by the amazing BAKED cafe, the event was the perfect setting to say a heartfelt thank you to all those involved on this years programme.

A special congratulations to Maria, Alison and Judi, who each celebrated five incredible years of volunteering with us — an inspiring milestone!

As Stuart Brady, Headteacher at Bidston Avenue Primary School, so perfectly put it today:
"You’re changing lives — one page at a time."

📚 A heartfelt thank you to Dave Perkins and the Cheshire Freemasons 💚

We are incredibly grateful to Dave Perkins for his outstanding support of our Johnson Foundation Children's Book Appeal 2025.

As soon as Dave heard about the appeal, he took swift action—reaching out to all Masonic Lodges within his remit and encouraging them to get involved. A passionate advocate for helping disadvantaged children and young people, Dave’s dedication sparked a fantastic response.

💫 The result? Over 450 books were generously donated from across the region and delivered to our Egerton House office!

These books have now been shared with local primary school children during our End of Year Celebrations for the Inspired Reading Programme —setting them up for a summer filled with reading, imagination, and discovery. 🌞📖

To Dave, and everyone who contributed—thank you. Your kindness is opening new chapters in young lives. 💛
