Cancer SMART champion and YCC trustee Bev (left on the pic) went along to the Pink Chai Breast Cancer Awareness event yesterday, held at the Hudawi Cultural Centre in Huddersfield. This free event was hosted by The Lipstick Project, a community project in Huddersfield offering a variety of support to local people. Bev is pictured with The Lipstick Project manager Nusrat Bibi.

Pink Chai is a community interest company that uses the cultural tradition of sharing chai to promote breast cancer awareness and women’s health education.

Under the message ‘Breast cancer affects everyone,’ the free event helped raise awareness, share information and encourage conversations about breast health and wellbeing. So, it was the perfect opportunity for us to share our important Cancer SMART message, including the importance of breast screening.

Bringing together faith leaders, community organisations, healthcare professionals, charities and local residents, this free event will explore how we can build more compassionate and inclusive communities, tackle the question “what does a good death look like to me” whilst aiming to improve support for people approaching the end of life and those experiencing bereavement.

The day will feature inspiring talks from faith leaders and guest speakers, interactive workshops, opportunities to network, exhibition stalls and a complimentary lunch prepared by WH Kitchen.

Key themes for the day will include:
- What does a good death look like to me?
- How can we build more compassionate and inclusive communities?
- How can we better support people approaching the end of life and those experiencing bereavement?

Join our Cancer SMART Champion, Bev, at the Pink Chai breast cancer awareness event at the Hudawi Cultural Centre on Great Northern Street, near Huddersfield town centre, from 10am to 3pm tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27.

The free event will bring together support services and local communities under the message ‘Breast cancer affects everyone,’ to raise awareness, share information and encourage conversations about breast health and wellbeing.

The event is hosted by the Lipstick Project, a Huddersfield community project which supports people struggling with everything from poverty and health problems to addictions and the pressures of everyday life.

The help offered includes a community food pantry, plus NVQ courses in food hygiene and food allergies, along with careers advice and craft sessions.

The activities take place at Birkby and Fartown Library on Lea Street in Hillhouse.

University of Southampton are developing a screening tool to help tailor care for people with cancer. If you have had cancer, they are inviting people to complete their survey, so that the researchers can assess whether their initial survey questions work well. Today is MDS World Awareness Day!

This is a rare form of blood cancer affecting the bone marrow which disrupts the production of normal, healthy blood cells. This can cause a range of symptoms including persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, unusual bruising or bleeding and frequent infections. It can lead to anaemia and can develop into acute myeloid leukaemia. It can vary in severity and usually affects people over the age of 60.

Lack of awareness of this rare disease can sometimes lead to delayed diagnosis, so please share and help change this.

The Best Protection Is Early Detection

Getting an early diagnosis of cancer can make a huge difference to your treatment options and overall outcome. For instance, if you catch bowel cancer early (stage 1), you have a 90% chance of recovery, compared to a 10% chance of recovery with a late diagnosis (stage 4). That's because in the early stages, cancer is still small and hasn't spread anywhere else, making it easier to treat or remove.

We've created a brand new flyer to help you to increase your chances of any early diagnosis.
You can do this by being aware of your own body (know YOUR normal), and checking your body for changes regularly (including regularly checking your chest/breasts, and testicles if you have them).
Taking part in the breast, cervical, bowel and lung screening programmes when invited to do so will help catch cancer early, before symptoms develop. It can even prevent cancer by finding abnormal cells that would have developed into cancer if left untreated.
If you do notice any new, unusual and persistent changes, see your GP quickly - don't delay or put it off.

Our new flyer will be double-sided, with our new Know YOUR Normal flyer on the back (see our separate post). We hope they will help raise awareness of these important messages. We'd love to know what you think of them.

Did you know, getting to know your body is so important when it comes to staying healthy? Being aware of your body and knowing what is normal for you means that if something changes, you can spot it and take action quickly.

We say knowing YOUR normal, because what is normal for you might not be normal for someone else.

We've created a brand new flyer to show you some of the signs and symptoms that you should look out for. These symptoms don't necessarily mean you have cancer, they can have a number of causes, but it's important to get them checked out quickly, especially if they are new, unusual for you and don't go away. But if it is cancer, the earlier it's caught, the better your chance of a favourable outcome.
