Team Reggie

Team Reggie We are a fundraising team raising money to help other causes. We have raised over £10,000 in the last few years, which has gone to various causes.

Reggie has Down's Syndrome and has always had the magical power of putting a smile on people's faces.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day 💙💛

And today, we celebrate Reggie, and the wider Down's Syndrome community.

Reggie’s smile has always had a way of lighting up a room, the kind that makes everything feel brighter. Every step he’s taken, every word he’s learned, every challenge he’s faced… he’s met it with determination, courage, and a spirit that inspires everyone around him.

He’s funny, playful, a little stubborn, and full of love, and he reminds us daily that progress isn’t measured by speed, but by heart.

Today is also about celebrating the wider Down Syndrome community, individuals, families, and supporters who show strength, resilience, and joy in ways that truly change the world. Together, they are breaking barriers, challenging perceptions, and proving that difference is something to be celebrated, not hidden.

Reggie, you are part of something truly special, and we couldn’t be prouder. 💛

What a rollercoaster of a day for our brave Reggie! 🎢 After being first on the list for his procedure, he handled everything like a pro, even drifting off with a quick kiss from Dad.
The recovery was a bit of a marathon with some stubborn bleeding from his incision that kept us on our toes (and led to an extra hospital visit last night), but our little fighter never lost his spark. We are so happy to report that the bleeding has stopped, and he’s back home doing what he does best: dancing, singing, and playing like nothing even happened! 🎶🕺 Thank you for all the love and surgery vibes!

Reggie is headed back into the hospital tomorrow to have his new central line placed. Since we removed the problematic one a few weeks ago, the infection has cleared beautifully, and he even managed a full week or so back at school!

He’s been "roll-calling" his favorites constantly, he can’t wait to see "his" Alice, "his" Mark, "his" Lorna, and "his" friend Rachel. We’re crossing our fingers that at least one of his beloved oncology nurses is on shift tomorrow to welcome him back! Aside from being a little "spirited" at school today (usually a sign he’s feeling a bit under the weather), he is in top form and ready to tackle this next step.

Hi everyone, it's been a while. We'd be lying if we said we hadn't been nervous today being friday the 13th and all.

To tell the truth, the last few weeks have been testing our nerves. Last summer Reggie had two back to back blood infections originating in his double portacath central line. We have since had issues with the scarring fusing to the bottom port. Since clearing these infections everything has been ok. Now for some reason over the last couple of weeks this scarring seems to have separated from the port and an infection has developed around the port which antibiotics have struggled to clear.

Things have progressed quickly over the last few days after Reggie went into clinic midweek for an infusion which had to be done by cannula which resulted in his arm swelling substantially.

Today Reggie had to go under the knife and have his portacath removed as it is no longer safe to use without risking further infection or sepsis. The plan had originally been to remove this at a later date and replace it with a single port for the remainder of his treatment, but due to the infection, Reggie will have to go back under the knife later this month for his single port placing, after we know he is clear of this infection.

Once he came around he was fairly upset and spent quite a while feeling very irritable, but slowly started to feel more himself after a few hours. He's back home now and recovering after what as been a very tiring couple of weeks.

It may seem a little early for some, but over the weekend Reggie's household started getting into the Christmas spirit.

Many of you will remember last year that Reggie was in hospital all over Christmas, and despite everyone's best efforts, we just couldn't celebrate it properly. Reggie dropped very ill Christmas day and went on to have high temperature spikes for 14 days. This on top of already being in isolation and all of us having very little contact with our other little boy for this reason. The walls had really closed in!

After the dust had settled somewhat, we made a vow that Christmas 2024 would be merged with 2025's, thus starting the celebrations early. Now Reggie is far from out of the woods, and with it being the season for pesky bugs doing the rounds, there's always a chance Reggie could take ill and be hospitalised again. So we're starting early hoping at the very least we manage some Christmas, and if we get it all (which is the plan) then what a bonus.

On a much more heartwarming note, we would just like to share our thanks to some wonderful people, who have still been working really hard to support the family by way of fundraising. Thank you to Emma Shaw Woodall and her team for the amazing coffee morning. Thank you to Tim Owen for the Team Reggie quiz, Joe Worthington ( Ackworth Road Runners ) for donating from the hoody sale, Ackworth Cricket Club for allowing the quiz to be held there, and a extra special thanks to Melanie Owen and Charlotte Saunders for not only arranging the quiz but for setting up the GoFundme and sorting everything out in the background so we didn't have to worry about anything.

Thank you all for your continued support and Merry Christmas 🎄🎅

Treatment continued

This week Reggie continued treatment with lumbar puncture and IV chemo. Daily home chemo has also restarted after seeing some recovery in his blood numbers. Now we're just battling the effects of steroids which are never fun.

Best of all, Reggie has been working really hard with his reading which we hope will help develop his speech. He's now moving onto his 3rd book. Others may struggle to interpret what Reggie is saying but we can and he's doing amazing.

1 maintenance Round done, 6'ish to go!

Things were going so well until our last post, then a small spanner was thrown in the works!

As planned Reggie went into hospital yesterday but whilst having routine observations it was picked up that Reggie had a temperature. With that and the fact he was Neutropenic, meant the lumbar puncture and immunoglobulin transfusion were cancelled and unfortunately Reggie had to be admitted. His central lines and peripheral bloods were taken for cultures, his nose and throat then swabbed before sending onto the ward.

The good news is that there aren't any results back from the cultures yet but he has tested positive for Para-Flu 1 which is a common cause of croup. From a clinical point of view, the hospital is happy to discharge. Once he has completed his Immunoglobulin transfusion, his needles will be removed and he will be able to return home. His lumbar puncture and IV chemo has been rescheduled for next week.

In himself, Reggie is doing ok and is still his happy cheeky self albeit a little under the weather.

What an amazing day that tired out the whole family.

There's no denying the day had its challenges but most importantly, Reggie loved it, or at least loved the music, the attention and shouting "Go Rovers!".

Featherstone Rovers really looked after us on Sunday making sure Reggie was spoilt, to the point he even ended up with Percy the Pit Pony's boots. A great performance to witness and a happy day for the family doing something that feels normal once again.

We must also give a big thank you to JLH Photography Yorkshire for capturing the day and providing us with many of the amazing images that are shown in the video.

And not forgetting David Merrick who has put so much effort in ensuring Reggie is looked after at the Rovers.

The last time we posted a video like this, it got over a million views. But thats not why we're posting again. The video recieved a lot of attention and it was unclear that Reggie, despite not really liking the procedure, would bounce back so quickly.

Due to trial and error early on in treatment, and then spending lots of time preparing him mentally, we found this to be the least traumatic way to go through what was a weekly ritual.

We wanted to raise some awareness but at the same time show just how quickly Reggie moves on. sometimes as soon as it's finished and we let go, he sits up with the biggest smile on his face and points to his port, as proud as punch, we always have a cuddle, give high fives and then play like nothing ever happened. He is one brave child, just like all the other kiddies are.

We would also like to give a big thank you to and Victoria Peckover's wonderful mum for all their amazing recent fundraising efforts for Reggie. Thank you! 🙂
