Somerset Cadet Battalion (The Ri**es) Army Cadet Force - Somerset Army Cadets - comprising, Gibralta

The Army Cadets is a voluntary uniformed youth organisation, partly sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. It has been successfully helping young people in their development for over 150 years. There are around 36,000 boys and girls aged between 12-18 years in the Army Cadets nationwide, with around 650 cadets and 220 adults in Somerset Army Cadets. There are four companies in the battalion; Gibraltar, Normandy, Jellalabad and Salamanca, all being named after our parent regiment's Battle Honours. In addition we have the Silver Bugles Band - a nationally recognised asset that has played for HM The Queen amongst others. The aim of the Army Cadets is to inspire young people to achieve success in life with a spirit of service to their country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of a good citizen. It is one of the country's leading youth organisations, run on military style guidelines, so a certain amount of discipline is to be expected. Army Cadets offers a full training syllabus designed to help young people to become good citizens and responsible members of the community. We offer various activities: climbing, canoeing, first aid training, target shooting, sports, weekend camping, annual camps, courses (cooking, leadership, physical training, communications), musical skills, service to the community, overseas expeditions, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and St John Ambulance, friendship, discipline, leadership, development - and loads of fun! STEM Challenge 2026 🤖

What a week for Normandy Company! Cadets from across the Company have been putting their skills, teamwork and problem-solving to the test at Exercise STEM Challenge 2026, taking part in a fantastic range of exciting activities and challenges.

As always, our cadets have done us incredibly proud, representing Somerset ACF to the highest standard and making the most of every opportunity.

But the excitement didn’t stop there! Our cadets were treated to an unforgettable experience flight aboard a British Army Chinook – certainly a highlight of the week! 🚁

National Cadets Week | Open Events

Throughout this week, detachments from across the Battalion have opened their doors to the community, giving visitors the opportunity to experience life as an Army Cadet and discover what being part of the Army Cadet Force is all about.

Rugby loving Army Cadet appointed as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet!

Huge congratulations to Cadet Sergeant Thomas Greaves, who has been appointed as a Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for 2026/27!

Thomas received his certificate of appointment personally from His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, at a special awards evening at Taunton Racecourse on Monday 28 September.

The Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet Investiture is one of the most prestigious honours a cadet can receive, recognising exceptional leadership, character and dedication, and Thomas has shown all of this in abundance since joining Somerset Army Cadets in 2023.

In that time, he's clocked up an incredible ninety four parade nights, excelled in Regional Rugby competitions, and completed the Junior Cadet Instructor Cadre, proving he's got real leadership potential. He's taken on the challenge of the "Paddles Up" Adventurous Training expedition, battling through two days of tough canoeing, and gained his Emergency First Aid at Work qualification along the way.

Rain or shine, Thomas turns up to every camp with enthusiasm, resilience and a smile, and it's no surprise he's widely respected by cadets and adult volunteers alike for always going the extra mile.

Congratulations Thomas, a truly well-deserved honour!
