Somerset Army Cadets

Somerset Army Cadets Somerset Cadet Battalion (The Rifles) Army Cadet Force - Somerset Army Cadets - comprising, Gibralta

The Army Cadets is a voluntary uniformed youth organisation, partly sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. It has been successfully helping young people in their development for over 150 years. There are around 36,000 boys and girls aged between 12-18 years in the Army Cadets nationwide, with around 650 cadets and 220 adults in Somerset Army Cadets. There are four companies in the battalion; Gibral

tar, Normandy, Jellalabad and Salamanca, all being named after our parent regiment's Battle Honours. In addition we have the Silver Bugles Band - a nationally recognised asset that has played for HM The Queen amongst others. Somerset Army Cadets’ national web site: https://armycadets.com/somersetacf/

The aim of the Army Cadets is to inspire young people to achieve success in life with a spirit of service to their country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of a good citizen. It is one of the country's leading youth organisations, run on military style guidelines, so a certain amount of discipline is to be expected. Army Cadets offers a full training syllabus designed to help young people to become good citizens and responsible members of the community. We offer various activities: climbing, canoeing, first aid training, target shooting, sports, weekend camping, annual camps, courses (cooking, leadership, physical training, communications), musical skills, service to the community, overseas expeditions, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and St John Ambulance, friendship, discipline, leadership, development - and loads of fun! A huge thank you to Shaun Regan Photography! 📸

We recently hosted our Battalion Touch Rugby Tournament to raise vital funds for Blesma, an incredible charity supporting serving and ex-service personnel who have suffered life-changing injuries.

It was a fantastic event, made even more memorable by our special guest joining in on the action! 🙌

Check out some of the best moments from the day below. 👇

A great day with Somerset Army Cadets who were raising funds for Blesma, The Limbless Veterans Charity, by hosting a fundraising rugby tournament. Sport in the Army Cadets helps teach young people teamwork, communication, discipline and leadership. It builds confidence, encourages healthy competition and helps cadets understand the importance of hard work, respect, and never giving up, lessons that stay with them for life! One of the cadets playing today played in front of 50,000 people at Twickenham a few weeks ago! Another great example of the unique opportunities available in this incredible organisation.

A huge congratulations to our incredible Cadet Cambrian Patrol Team from Jelallabad and Salamanca Company for their effort this weekend.

They pushed through rain, hail storms and difficult terrain to cross the finish line and gain a Bronze medal standard. We couldn’t be prouder of their commitment, teamwork and perseverance. 💪🏽

County Commandant Col Steve Kendall MBE, Adult Instructors and Cadets from Midsomer Norton Platoon were delighted to be invited to the Somerset and Dorset Heritage Railway Trusts 1940’s Day.

Col Kendall was honoured to unveil a plaque in memory of the service given by the Midsomer Norton Home Guard who would have defended a Pillbox at the location in the event of invasion.

Col Kendall said ‘This is especially significant for the Army Cadet Force.

The 2IC of the Home Guard was Captain Gordon Hillier who was also Head of the Somerset Army Cadet Battalion during the war years.

Secondly one of the patrons of this event is Alan Readhead who has published a book on the Midsomer Norton Home Guard. His father was Lt Bill Readhead who was a Home Guard member and he took part in a shooting competition in October 1944 with the Army and the Police. The Home Guard won (with Lt Readhead playing a significant part in the victory). The prize cup was donated to the Army Cadets to inspire the next generation of marksmen.

I am delighted to say that when Alan enquired if we still had the cup we found it in our stores and it has been renovated and will be presented again to our best cadet shot. It will be known as the ‘Bill Readhead Cup’. A fitting tribute I think to connect todays cadets with those who served in the past’.
