🌿 October half term is here!

We've put together a guide to family days out in Swansea, Mumbles and Gower, with plenty of ideas for the week ahead.

🐒 Meet the animals at Plantasia Tropical Zoo
🧗 Try Ninja Warrior UK Swansea or Crazy Climb Swansea
🌳 Explore Clyne Valley Country Park or visit the dinosaurs in Singleton Park.
🏖️ Wrap up warm for a walk or some rock pooling on a Gower beach.
🐴 Meet our horses at Clyne Farm Centre or get muddy at Challenge Valley.

There are indoor options for rainy days too, including bowling and mini golf.

We've included some of our favourite local places, plus a few ideas for days out further afield.

How do you celebrate Dylan Thomas’s birthday? In his childhood home, of course.

On Tuesday 27 October, we’re throwing Dylan a birthday bash at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, with our old friends Buttonsville (pictured) back in the front parlour for an evening of live music, good company and a little birthday mischief.

Expect Americana, jazz and plenty of Dylan. And yes, there’ll be some of the other Dylan too.

We’ll also be serving suitably vintage birthday treats, including the return of the Spam and Marmite sandwiches. Whether that persuades you to buy a ticket or puts you off completely, we’ll leave up to you...

It’s a chance to celebrate Dylan’s birthday inside the house where he was born and spent the first 23 years of his life, with music and laughter filling the rooms once again.

Can’t make it to Swansea? You can join the party from home too. We’ll be streaming the evening live on Zoom from Dylan’s front parlour, so you can pull up a chair and celebrate with us wherever you are.

Music, poetry and friends gathered in Dylan’s front parlour.

On Friday 13th November, join us for a special evening of live music.

Multi-instrumentalist Susanna Warren is best known as the front woman for well loved Swansea band Afternoon in Paris, but is also a well regarded song-writer and performer in her own right. She has been described as a cross between Kirsty MacColl and Victoria Wood.

Her eclectic songs reflect a broad musical experience, with sharp lyrics and melodies that take emotion straight to the heart. It's a joyful, poignant and sometimes cynical mix of sounds. For this intimate piano based show she is joined by her Afternoon in Paris partner guitarist, Jeremy Young and vibrant cellist Ann Jameson.

The evening comes just a few days after the anniversary of Dylan’s death on 9 November 1953. We’ll remember him not in silence, but with words and music filling the childhood home where so much of his writing began.

The front parlour makes for a wonderfully intimate place to hear live music, with just a small audience gathered close to the musicians.

And if you can’t make it to Swansea, you can join us from home. We’ll be streaming the evening live on Zoom directly from Dylan’s front parlour.

Just two seats left in the parlour for Three Poets this Monday.

On Monday evening, we’ll be welcoming Peter Thabit Jones, Christopher Norris and Mark Lewis to the Dylan Thomas Birthplace for an intimate evening of poetry, conversation and readings celebrating three new collections from Seventh Quarry Press.

Hearing poets read their own work in Dylan’s front parlour feels particularly fitting, in the house where he spent the first 23 years of his life and wrote around two-thirds of his published work.

We now have just two places remaining in the parlour, but if you can’t join us in Swansea, you can also watch the whole evening live on Zoom from wherever you are.

Could you spend a Wednesday or Sunday with Dylan? 🏡

We’re looking for new volunteers to join our small, friendly team at the Dylan Thomas Birthplace, helping us welcome visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays.

We particularly need extra help on Sundays, but would love to have more Wednesday cover too. Ideally, we’d like a few people who can share the days, so you wouldn’t necessarily need to commit every week.

🌍 Welcome visitors from around the world
🏡 Help visitors get started with their tour of the house
📖 Give a short introductory talk about Dylan and the house
☕ Help with the occasional tea and Welsh cakes

You don’t need to be a Dylan expert. We’ll give you training, and everything you need. We’re simply looking for friendly, confident and reliable people aged 18+ who enjoy meeting others.

And when the house is quiet? Bring a book, your knitting or another craft and enjoy spending a little time in this very special place.

It was good to meet up with historian Emma Kay. Emma is writing a culinary biography of Dylan Thomas. The book seeks to tap into all aspects of Dylan's work and private life associated with food and drink, both from the imagery of his work (prose and poetry) to the relevance of places like the Kardomah, the Edwinsford and the Farmer's Arms, and the food he experienced when travelling through Italy, America, and other places. I wonder what she thought of her tea and Welsh cakes served on vintage china in Dylan's front parlour?

Like many Americans Michelle from New York grew up listening each Christmas Eve to her father reading A Child's Christmas in Wales.

It sparked an interest in Dylan Thomas and today she travelled from Cardiff, especially to visit the birthplace of her favourite writer, along with friend Joe, who happens to live opposite the Hotel Chelsea in New York.

The Muddy Challenge 2026 is back! 💙

Get ready to get muddy, get moving and take on an unforgettable challenge in support of Faith in Families!

On Saturday 12th September 2026, we’re heading to Clyne Farm Centre for the world’s muddiest assault course, Challenge Valley! 🌿💪

Expect 60-90 minutes of climbing, crawling, jumping, teamwork and plenty of laughs. This isn’t about being the fastest, it’s about having fun, getting completely covered in mud, and making memories while raising money to support children and families across Swansea Bay.
