Introducing... our newest Age Connects West Midlands recruits: the Smilers! 😊

These cheeky knitted characters have been lovingly created by our Communitea Café Monday morning Knit and Natter group. Their first assignment? To spread a little joy and raise a smile across Birmingham!

The Smilers will be hidden in little corners across Birmingham for you to find. If you discover one of our knitted friends on your travels, we'd love for you to share your smile by posting a photo of your find and tagging us on social media to help raise awareness.

You can choose to keep your Smiler or place it in a new location for someone else to find and enjoy.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to our knitting group for creating these wonderful characters.

Keep your eyes peeled! 👀

Here's a heartwarming story from one of our Friendship Groups, which meets every Wednesday at our Communitea Café, Boldmere.

The weekly meet-ups are a fantastic way to tackle social isolation in the local community. Led by Julia, the group has grown from just one attendee to 16 regular members, bringing together people who may have felt isolated and wanted to connect with like-minded individuals.

What started as a room full of strangers soon became a group of friends. As people got to know one another, conversations flourished, confidence grew, and wellbeing improved. Many exchanged phone numbers so they could stay in touch and meet up outside of the weekly sessions.

One particularly touching example of these friendships came after the sad passing of a member who had attended the group with his daughter-in-law. She remained in contact with the group and later invited everyone to celebrate her 60th birthday in a field, complete with stone-baked pizzas and records playing in the background. Twelve members attended and had a wonderful time together.

It's a joy to see friendships and social connections continue to grow beyond the Wednesday sessions, showing the real impact that community and companionship can have on people's lives.
