GWCT Scotland

GWCT Scotland Leading UK charity conducting conservation science. The place for everything Scottish related.

This page has recently changed from being dedicated to The Scottish Auction to covering all of GWCT Scotland's Events. There are numerous events run throughout Scotland each year which are organised by regional committees from across the country. All of the proceeds from the events are invested directly to the invaluable work of GWCT Scotland. Regions that host events are listed below and they inc

lude dinners & auctions, clay pigeon days, golf competitions, shoot walks, social evenings, (Scotland's first Hip flask challenge will be held in Edinburgh in 2018 - look out for it!) and of course, The Scottish Auction itself. Regions that host events:

Edinburgh and South East Scotland
Fife & Kinross
Grampian
Highland
Tayside
West of Scotland

Keep an eye open for events as they are advertised on this page and contact Rory Donaldson at [email protected] for further information on any of the events, if you'd like to donate a Lot to an auction or if you'd be interested in speaking to any of the Regional Chairmen about becoming more involved in the events. Should you wish to provide a Lot for The Scottish Auction please contact Angela Walker at [email protected] who will be delighted to hear from you

A tiny tag, a big story. 🪶📡

Kathy is preparing radio tags that will be fitted to red grouse hens as part of our Maternal Grouse Project.

By tracking the hens through the breeding season, our scientists can learn more about nesting, chick survival and what influences breeding success.

Every tag helps us understand more. 🪶 Head to GWCT website to read more on the Maternal Grouse project.

For any of you who didn’t catch Josh Burton from Abercairney Estate talking to GWCT’s Fiona Torrance at the Scottish Game Fair about his passion project - reintroducing wild grey partridge to the estate. It was a fascinating account from Josh who has been working as conservation manager on the estate for 15 of the last 18 years.

There is increasing recognition of links between land management and water quality. At the Scottish Game Fair GWCT Scotland’s Ross MacLeod was joined by Clara Schade-Poulsen from Forth Rivers Trust and Will Beaumont from GWCT fisheries to talk through the pressing issues when it comes to our rivers.

For those who did not manage to hear this talk on a fair co-existence for Wildcats with GWCT’s Ross MacLeod and Dr Helen Senn from RZSS first hand at the Scottish Game Fair, here is a clip. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust will be working with the partnership project to develop fair co-existence between wildcats and people. GWCT will liaise with estates and practitioners in the wildcat release area to facilitate tracking and develop best practice guidance to mitigate gamebird impacts. The Trust also aims to build evidence recording to support licensing needs, engaging with key partners, communities and government agencies. The project will also monitor for impacts on other species such as waders, grouse and capercaillie. Throughout the initiative, our aim is to ensure that the benefits deriving from game management balance sustainable, economic land use with wider biodiversity objectives.

Red grouse are one of Britain’s most iconic upland birds — but recent GWCT monitoring has revealed worrying declines.
In spring 2025, our long-term data recorded an average 40% decline in red grouse pair counts across England and a 34% decline in Scotland in2025, following a poor breeding season in 2024.
That’s why GWCT’s Maternal Grouse Project is taking a closer look at what drives breeding success. By following individual hens through the nesting season, our researchers are studying how factors such as nutrition, habitat quality, weather, parasites and chick food availability all interact.
Backed by almost 45 years of grouse research, this work will help us better understand why some populations recover while others continue to struggle — and support more resilient upland management for the future.
