Humanism in Scotland

Humanism in Scotland Humanism in Scotland is a not-for-profit secular organisation based in Scotland, founded in 2014 Our beliefs are secular but we are not anti-religion.

Humanism in Scotland is a not-for-profit organisation formed in 2014. We follow the codes and practices of the world-wide Humanist Union, HUMANISTS INTERNATIONAL. We are not here to dictate belief or moral authority. The automomy of the individual is paramount. You should be free to express yourself unhindered by any fellow human... but you have a responsibility with this freedom. We should always

be mindful of how our words and actions can affect others. In accordance with 'The Golden Rule', we try to treat others as we wish to be treated. Our Celebrants are authorised to perform legal weddings in Scotland. We don't ask couples to subscribe to our organisation and we never ask for membership fees. When a couple asks us to marry them, we guide and inspire them into creating with us a truly unique and memorable wedding ceremony. "Your love in your words." We carry an automatic legal authority to perform weddings in any venue. This means you can have a wedding ceremony anywhere you are allowed! On a beach.. in the woods.. up Ben Nevis or in a cave. Down at your local pub, in your team's dressing room or in a beautiful hotel.. with our Celebrants, Scotland is your oyster!

The double standards in Europe prove that governments, NGOs, corporations, media and cultural institutions only care about human rights when it suits them.

The Eurovision song contest calls itself a symbol of unity and peace, so how can it ban Russia and yet allow israel to take part? The global boycott of israel (BDS - Boycott Divest Sanction) has been happening for decades because israel has always been a brutal apartheid state. Now it is much worse. It is a genocidal state, yet the mainstream ignores this. Why?

If you believe in human rights for all, add your name to the hundreds of thousands who have signed this petition - and please boycott Eurovision and any cultural or sporting event that allows a supremacist, genocidal state to take part. The global boycott of South Africa helped to end Apartheid in the 1990s. It is our duty to come together again and refuse to normalise (or ignore) what israel is doing. 🕊️🤍

Five countries already pulled out in protest for Palestine. The final is this Saturday! Add your name now to push more nations to take a stand!

PALESTINE 36 ~ A MODERN MASTERPIECE.
So committed to telling the true story of Palestine, they dared to film under the noses of the genocidal occupation in 2023. That takes some mettle. The brave people who made this film deserve our attention. This is one of the most important films of the 21st century - and the fact that it exists proves that in a world of lies, truth will always prevail. Why? Because truth is a superpower and it is a power we can all use. Love connects us, but truth is the courage we need in this war on humanity.

Duncan has made the news! Following his fabulous UK award last week, the paparazzi turned up at his door! Here is a snippet from The Falkirk Herald's report:

A Falkirk celebrant says winning a national award is “a huge honour” which means “the absolute world” to him.

Duncan Fleming was named Celebrant of the Year at the Nations Wedding Awards held in Birmingham last week. Having been runner-up at the awards last year, he took the top spot in the category this year.

Duncan told The Falkirk Herald, "It means the absolute word to me. I feel like I’ve climbed Everest and I’ve reached the summit."

The awards celebrate wedding professionals from across the UK who have gone above and beyond, and made a real difference with their excellent services.

Congratulations Duncan, we are so proud of you!

First, he won in Falkirk. Then last year, he triumphed at Scotland's national awards in Glasgow. And now, Mr Duncan Fleming, celebrant extra-ordinaire, has been awarded CELEBRANT OF THE YEAR at the UK WEDDING AWARDS in Birmingham!!
CONGRATULATIONS, Duncan Fleming Celebrant, we are so proud of you! This recognition is so well deserved because not only are you a dedicated and brilliant celebrant for wedding couples and families, but you are also an incredible part of our team. We are only eight strong, but with you, we are a rugby team, powering over the line, every time! You give your commitment and love to everyone you meet, even when you are so busy, so we thank you for everything you do.
Your UK award is the least you deserve. A statue in Glencoe, where you grew up, would be more like it! Well done, Duncan! Our love to you and Sandra after an incredible week.🤩🥰❤️❤️

The movie they tried to ban in the US is on limited release in Scotland from today, Friday 16th January. It's not on for long, so hurry!
In Edinburgh, you can see the film at the Filmhouse on Lothian Road. Also available at select Odeon cinemas, eg Braehead in Glasgow.

When Ben Hania (the film's director) first heard Hind's voice, she sensed "something beyond her words. It was the voice of Gaza itself calling for help—and no one could reach her."

If humanity could look in the mirror, what would we see? Would we see the brilliance and beauty of art, music, invention and love? Would our reflection sparkle with jewels of kindness, community, cooperation and peace? Would we see our instinct to nurture and protect the weak and the young? Or the doctors, nurses, carers, parents, grandparents, teachers and storytellers? Would we see the heroes who walk among us?

And would we see the children? Happy children living a safe and dignified life, free from poverty, persecution and war? Or would the mirror show all the horrors that exist? Will it take a mirror for us to see, because if we don't see, or if we look away, the worst of humanity will rise from the shadows. Why? Because we allow it to.

On this day, see the victims of genocide and ask yourself: if genocide is the crime of crimes, why is there silence when thousands of children are exterminated like rats? Where is the global industry of justice to stand up against the global industry of war?

We must accept the horror in our reflection because we can no longer add genocide to our list of human achievements. To celebrate what makes us great means nothing if we look away from what makes us sick. If only we could see ourselves the way an eight-year-old survivor of genocide sees us.

What do the victims of genocide need? Justice.
Who can bring justice? Witnesses like you and me.
