Learning English through Drama

Learning English through Drama combines language learning with creativity, confidence and fun. The programme gives women opportunities to practise everyday English through role-play, conversation and performance rather than relying only on traditional classroom learning. Participants can practise situations they may experience in daily life, helping them become more confident speaking and listening in English. Drama also encourages teamwork, self-expression and friendship, creating a relaxed environment where women do not need to worry about making mistakes. For women who have moved from Hong Kong to the UK, the programme supports integration into their new community while allowing them to maintain their own cultural identity and build confidence in their new home.

Traditional Mahjong

Mahjong is more than just a traditional Chinese game – for many people from Hong Kong, it is also a familiar social activity that brings people together. Our Mahjong sessions provide women with a relaxed space to play, talk, laugh and make new friends while maintaining a connection with an important part of their cultural and social life. The game encourages concentration, memory, communication and social interaction. For women adapting to life in the UK, familiar activities such as Mahjong can help reduce isolation and create a sense of belonging. The sessions help retain Hong Kong cultural traditions while building friendships and stronger community connections in Rotherham

Chinese Opera "Rotherham Women’s Creative Culture Hub" 24/10/2026

Chinese Opera

Chinese Opera is an important part of traditional Chinese performing arts and cultural heritage. Our programme gives women an opportunity to explore and maintain this tradition through music, performance, movement and storytelling. For participants from Hong Kong, Chinese Opera can bring back memories of familiar cultural traditions while providing an opportunity to share this heritage with others. The sessions encourage creativity, confidence and social participation, bringing women together through a shared interest in traditional performing arts. By continuing Chinese Opera activities in Rotherham, we aim to help ensure that this valuable cultural tradition is not lost when people move to a new country, but remains active within our community

Tai Chi "Rotherham Women’s Creative Culture Hub" 24/10/2026
Tai Chi

Tai Chi combines traditional Chinese culture with gentle physical activity and wellbeing. Our sessions provide women with an opportunity to practise controlled movements, balance, breathing and relaxation in a welcoming group environment. The activity is suitable for women with different levels of experience and encourages participants to remain active while enjoying an important part of traditional Chinese culture. For women who have moved to a new country, taking part in a familiar cultural activity can also provide comfort, friendship and a sense of belonging. Through regular participation, we aim to support physical and mental wellbeing while helping to retain Chinese cultural traditions within our Rotherham community.

Rotherham Women’s Creative Culture Hub
On Saturday, 24 October 2026, we held our Rotherham Women’s Creative Culture Hub, a community project funded by Arts Council England.

The project brings women together through creativity, culture and learning, with a particular focus on the retention of Hong Kong and traditional Chinese culture after moving to a new country.

The project includes six programmes: traditional Chinese calligraphy, Tai Chi, traditional crochet, Chinese Opera, traditional Mahjong, and Learning English through Drama.

Through these activities, women can learn and share traditional skills, practise English, build friendships, improve their wellbeing and reduce social isolation. The project also provides a space where participants can share their knowledge, memories and cultural traditions with one another.

Our aim is to help women keep Hong Kong culture alive in Rotherham after moving to a new country, while creating an inclusive and welcoming space where they can maintain their cultural identity, develop confidence, make new connections and become part of their new community.

Traditional Chinese Calligraphy

Traditional Chinese calligraphy is much more than beautiful handwriting. It is an important part of Chinese cultural heritage and provides a connection to language, history and tradition. Through our calligraphy sessions, women can learn and practise traditional writing techniques in a friendly and relaxed environment. Participants can develop their skills, express their creativity and share their cultural knowledge with one another. For women who have moved from Hong Kong to the UK, the sessions provide an opportunity to maintain a connection with their cultural identity while building new friendships in Rotherham. The activity also supports relaxation, concentration and personal wellbeing.

Monday Lunch 19-10-2026

Our Monday Lunch on 19 October 2026 brought members of our community together to share a delicious meal, enjoy friendly conversations, and build meaningful connections in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The gathering offered new migrants and refugees an opportunity to meet others, develop friendships, and feel a stronger sense of belonging within the community. By sharing food and spending quality time together, participants were able to support one another, enhance their wellbeing, and help reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this gathering a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

Allotment 12/10/2026 a

Our Allotment activity on 12 October 2026 brought volunteers together at the Wah Hong allotment to enjoy a productive day of gardening. Volunteers worked together on various gardening tasks, helping to maintain the allotment, care for the plants, and keep the space tidy and welcoming.

The activity provided a great opportunity for volunteers to enjoy the outdoors, develop their gardening skills, and share knowledge and experiences with one another. Working together also encouraged teamwork, strengthened community connections, and supported participants’ physical and emotional wellbeing while helping to reduce social isolation.

Monday lunch 12/10/2026

Our Monday Lunch on 12 October 2026 brought members of our community together to enjoy a delicious meal and friendly conversation in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The gathering provided a safe and supportive space for new migrants and refugees to connect with others, make new friends, and strengthen their social networks. Spending time together over a shared meal supported participants’ wellbeing and helped reduce social isolation.

Walking Group 12/10/2026 Palladian South Range of Wentworth Castle

Our Walking Group on 12 October 2026 enjoyed a wonderful walk around the Palladian South Range of Wentworth Castle. Participants took in the beautiful surroundings, enjoyed the fresh air, and shared a relaxing and enjoyable experience together.

The walk provided a valuable opportunity for members of our community to stay physically active, connect with others, and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. Spending time together in nature also supported participants’ physical and emotional wellbeing, encouraged social interaction, and helped build friendships and reduce social isolation.
