🌕🏹 THE HUNTER’S MOON IS ALMOST HERE! 🍂✨

Get ready to enjoy October’s Full Moon on October 26, 2026!The Moon will appear nearly full and bright on the nights of October 25–27, so you don’t have to wait for the exact moment to enjoy the view.

🍂 Why is it called the Hunter’s Moon?

Traditionally, the Hunter’s Moon is the first Full Moon after the Harvest Moon. In the Northern Hemisphere, this seasonal name is associated with the time when the harvest had ended and hunters could use the Moon’s light to spot animals and prepare for winter.

🔺 A celestial bonus!

On the nights of October 25–26, look for the Moon and Saturn in the night sky.

🌌 Mark your calendar. Look up. Explore the universe!🔭

The Witch’s Broom Nebula 🍂🧹

The Western Veil always pulls me back. There’s something about that brilliant star shining through the delicate strands of gas that makes this my favorite part of the entire Veil Nebula.

I captured this supernova remnant in a single night from the backyard, using a reflector telescope to collect as much light as possible.

A one-shot color camera and dual-bandpass filter make a fantastic pairing for this target. If NGC 6960 is still on your fall imaging list, there’s time to give it a go! 😎

🌒 And the winners are… 🏆

Thank you to everyone who entered the Redditch Eclipse Photograph Competition! Despite the clouds on 12 August, you captured some great images of the partial solar eclipse, and it was a tough decision.

🥇 Best Overall Eclipse Photograph: Trevor Brampton
“On a very cloudy event managed to get a few shots but this is one of my favourites.” Trevor wins a professionally printed canvas from Flyers by Night and his photo will be featured in the Redditch Astronomical Society 2027 calendar.

📱 Best Smartphone Photograph: Helen Jones
Helen took her shot on a Google Pixel 9 right outside her front door. “Perfectly on time!” Her photo will also appear in our 2027 calendar.

Congratulations, Trevor and Helen! 👏 And thank you to everyone who came along to our public event at Meadow Farm.

Mars and Jupiter are going to be spectacular this month. They're close together in the morning sky before dawn.

Have you seen them yet? If there are any beginner stargazers in your life who would love to see the planets, share this chart with them! Let's spread the word.

2 October – 7 November - The Orionid meteor shower
With a maximum rate of around 15 meteors per hour, the Orionid meteor shower is active from 2 October until 7 November and peaks with a broad maximum lasting about a week around 21 October.
In 2026 the Moon will be in its waxing gibbous phase during the peak, so moonlight will unfortunately interfere with seeing the best of this shower, but its long duration means you’ll have other chances to see Orionid meteors.
Orionid meteors tend to be particularly fast with persistent trains, and they originate from Comet 1P/Halley, famously known as Halley's Comet.
