Not that long ago … 🤰🏻

On this day in 1978 (that’s right, not even 50 years ago) women could officially no longer be fired for getting pregnant. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was signed into law, protecting workers from being fired, demoted, or denied opportunities because they were pregnant.

It was a huge step toward equality in the workplace. More than four decades later, pregnancy discrimination still happens…but let this milestone also serve as a reminder that if advocacy got us this far, it can get us even further.

NEW RIGHT #1:
You can no longer be fired for striking.

From Oct 30th, being fired for striking is considered “unfair dismissal”.

You are also protected against other forms of workplace detriment as a result of organising or taking part in a strike; cutting hours, blocking promotion or pay rise, refusing training or bullying and harassment.

NEW RIGHT #2:
Your employer must legally inform you of your right to join a union

- All new employees must be informed of their right to join a union from Jan 1st 2027
- All existing employees must be informed of their right to join a union from April 5th 2027

NEW RIGHT #3:
Unions have a legal right to access workplaces.

Before, it was a toss up whether you ended up in a unionised workplace or not. Now, unions can inform workplaces of their wish to visit the site, or contact workers through digital means in order to provide information and recruit.

NEW RIGHT #4
You are protected from unfair dismissal from 6 months of service

You used to only get these protections after 2 years of service. From January 2027, you will be protected after only 6 months.

Amazon is under fire for allegedly using an AI tool to predict if a warehouse is going to unionise. The tool, called Atlas, draws information from employee feedback forms, Reddit, local economic factors, and historical organising activity in the area. Each location is then given a score between 100 and 900; the higher the score, the “better for the employer”.

Amazon has always been aggressively anti-union, with multiple instances of anti-union propaganda being found in offices, break rooms, and training videos over the years.

But why are they so anti-union? Unions provide protection for workers against exploitative work practices - such as excessively long hours, lack of toilet breaks, and limited pay rises. These are all things Amazon needs to continue making such huge profits.
