MAYORAL HONOUR FOR THE PRESTON GROUP

Community Engagement is one of the key Pillars in Freemasonry. It is a really important commitment by the Preston Group. A simple objective to reintegrate Preston Masons with their wider community.
Through a commitment to support local foodbanks and local volunteer charities, the work is indeed being noticed. On one foodbank delivery, a local councillor called in with the MP for Preston and sang our praises to him. Allied to that Preston Masonic Hall to provide no or low cost facilities for those local volunteer charities. This has involved a wide and diverse range of charities.

The Group also have a policy of supporting local events which brings Freemasonry to the public eye such as the Lancashire Festival, The Preston City Mela and other local festivals.

Earlier in the year, the Preston Group was shortlisted for one of the Proud Preston Awards. The council Chief Executive commented at that event that it was refreshing to see that Masons were finally being recognised for their hard and selfless work in the Preston Community.

The retiring Mayor of Preston, Councillor Sue Whittam was so impressed after learning of the wide and varied work that Preston Masons do that, he has awarded one of the Mayoral Plaques to the Preston Group. She commented on the support and donations we have made in Preston.

Group Officers were invited to the Mayors Parlour for tea and biscuits to receive the honour. This was presented in the magnificent Council Chamber at the Town Hall.

IAN’S RIGHT ROYAL JUBILEE
It was a night of celebration at Preston Portcullis Chapter No 6316 as Ian Greewood attained that magnificent achievement of 50 years in the Royal Arch. The Chapter Room was a near capacity as a much loved Companion celebrated this magnificent milestone.

Although originally an East Lancashire Mason, Ian was exalted into Preston Guild Chapter No 4408 in West Lancashire several years before becoming a Joining Member of Preston Guild Lodge. Ian’s devotion to the Royal Arch was rewarded in the Province by appointments to Past Provincial Grand Sojourner and Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehamiah in 1995 and 1997 respectively. He was further honoured by Supreme Grand Chapter as Past Grand Standard Bearer and Past Assistant Grand Sojourner in 1997 and 2008 respectively. Ian has had a very illustrious Royal Arch career to date.

Guest of Honour for Ian’s Jubilee was Mike Threlfall, Past Second Provincial Grand Principal. Mike had worked with Ian on the Preston Group Executive for many years and they are firm friends. Mike gave an entertaining account of Ian’s life and time in the Royal Arch which was enjoyed by all.

Other Grand Officers supported Ian. Paul Hesketh, a Past Assistant to the Grand Principals took a trip down Memory Lane and acted as Provincial DC for the evening. Bill Huck, Peter Lockett and Neil Ward added to the gravitas as Grand Officers.

At the end of the meeting, the assemble multitude retired to a very tasty Festive Board. Ian’s very good friend from East Lancashire, Martin Blades amused all with stories of Ian’s past before proposing the toast to his health.

Everyone parted feeling they know more about Ian the man as well as Ian the Royal Arch Mason.
