Welsh Powerlifting Association

Welsh Powerlifting Association The home of Welsh powerlifting The WPA is also directly affiliated to the Commonwealth Powerlifting Association (CPA).

The WPA

The Welsh Powerlifting Association (WPA) was formed in July 2012 to replace the Welsh Powerlifting Union (WPU) as the only powerlifting federation within Wales that’s directly affiliated to the Great Brtitain Powerlifting Federation (GBPF). This means that members of the WPA who meet the qualifying standards for the GBPF British championships at either Junior, Open or Masters can compete

at the British Championships. Furthermore, WPA members can also be selected to represent Wales in both the Four Nations Powerlifting Championships and the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. In turn, the GBPF is affiliated to the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) which is widely regarded as the number one federation in the world. This means that if any WPA members meet the specified criteria, they can be selected to join the GBPF squad and then represent the UK at international competitions. Members of the WPA can compete in the following events:

Unequipped (also known as “classic”) Powerlifting
Equipped Powerlifting
Unequipped Bench Press
Equipped Bench Press

The WPA follows all the rules and regulations defined by the IPF

Welsh Powerlifting is proud to announce and celebrate the induction of Philip “Phil” Richard into the International Powerlifting Federation Hall of Fame.

As the highest honour awarded by the IPF, Hall of Fame induction recognises Phil’s outstanding achievements, contributions, and service to the sport of powerlifting and the international powerlifting community.

Phil’s impact on our sport extended far beyond the medals he won; over a remarkable career spanning more than four decades, he inspired generations of lifters through his dedication, humility, and passion for powerlifting. Phil left a legacy that continues to be felt across the powerlifting communities in Wales, Great Britain, and beyond.

His induction into the IPF Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of everything he gave to the sport, and a testament to the lasting influence he had on those who knew him and competed alongside him.

If you’re unfamiliar with Phil’s incredible journey and contribution to our sport, the BarBend tribute written by Jo Whiteley offers a fantastic insight into his life and legacy, please find the link in our bio.

Many congratulations to Phil’s family and loved ones on this thoroughly deserved honour.
