🚘🚙 COMMUNITY TRANSPORT WEEK 2026 – Meet Graham, another of our terrific drivers! 🚙🚘

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Graham, another of our wonderful volunteer drivers, who has been part of the Access Plymouth family for eight years! 👏🏻

After moving to Plymouth with his wife for their retirement, it wasn’t long before he found a new way to keep busy and give back to his community.

And it’s not just the passengers who benefit! Alongside meeting lots of lovely people, he’s also discovered more of Plymouth, sometimes introducing passengers to places they’ve never even visited before, despite living in the city all their lives!

🚘🚙 COMMUNITY TRANSPORT WEEK 2026 - Meet Paul, one of our fantastic volunteer drivers🚙🚘

This Community Transport Week we are celebrating our incredible volunteers and team who give their time, energy and care to support older and disabled people across Plymouth! We are always striving to help people stay connected to their community and maintain their independence and our community car drivers do so much to make this happen!

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Paul, who volunteers with us three mornings a week following his retirement.

🎙️”I’m not one for sitting around all day, and volunteering for Access Plymouth 3 mornings each week fills up my spare hours nicely”

Having spent his working life in hospitality, Paul has always been a people person, and it shows through his fantastic rapport with clients, getting to know them and hearing about their lives.

🎙️”I know from talking to my customers how much they value the service that Access offers, and the help that the drivers offer.”

Paul’s story highlights what makes community car driving so special. It’s about more than getting from A to B, it’s about a friendly face, chatting with someone new and a supportive arm to the door. It’s about making connections.

A huge thank you to Paul and every single one of our fantastic volunteer drivers for everything you do. Your kindness and commitment make a real difference in our community.

It's been a rather busy week at Shopmobility, which we love! But it's reminded us of the importance of pre-booking your mobility scooters, we'd hate for you to get to us and find your preferred machine (or any machine at all 😬) isn't available! You can book your scooter up to a week in advance but even if you're popping into town on a whim, a phone call first goes a long way in helping our volunteers and team be ready for you and get you on your way as smoothly as possible!

A friendly reminder that our phone lines are open from 09:15 to 16:00, Monday to Friday.

We kindly ask that when you can, you call us to book any equipment hires before turning up, we like to be prepared and make sure your equipment is available and ready to go when you get here!

A quick reminder for our Shopmobility clients!

A non-negotiable part of joining the service to use our scooters around town is a quick assessment and registration. This is also repeated every 12 months when your membership expires. This is to ensure you and the people around you are safe while you use the scooter.

The retest is usually quick and simple, but it is essential. Unfortunately, if an expired membership takes you by surprise when you arrive and we don't have the staff who can train you available, we will have to turn you away.

We never want to do this, and luckily it is avoidable! Give your membership card a quick read for your expiry date and give us a call to book a slot for your refresher training. If you can't find your card or you're not sure, give us a call! Especially if its been a long while since you used us, we're happy to look into where you're up to with your membership and ensure you're set up for success!

We’re Hiring: Part-Time Minibus Driver
Access Plymouth is looking for a reliable, patient and caring Part-Time Minibus Driver to join our team and provide school transport for vulnerable passengers across Plymouth.

The Role
• Hours: 20 hours per week, term time only
• Monday to Friday: 7.30am–9.30am and 2.30pm–4.30pm
• Pay: £12.71 per hour
• Location: Plymouth
• Holidays: Annual leave will need to be taken during school holidays/non-term time

About You
We’re looking for someone who is:
• Reliable and punctual
• Patient and understanding
• Vehicle aware and safety conscious
• A good, friendly communicator
• Someone who shares our values and the aims of our charity

Essential Requirements
• A D1 entitlement on your driving licence
• You must be over 25
• An Enhanced DBS check is required. This will be arranged through Plymouth City Council.
• MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) training will be provided.
