How will baby cuttlefish cope with future ocean conditions? 🤔

Introducing our first paper in the Cuttlefish Investigations series! This study looked at how warming and acidification - two key effects of climate change - impact the way cuttlefish hatch, move, and hide. 🐣

Last week, the MMO released the Cuttlefish Fishery Action Plan, which is one of the outputs of the Channel NQS FMP.
The purpose of this Action Plan is to deliver on the goals of the FMP, which includes sustainable management of the cuttlefish population. We're disappointed that the Plan does not suggest any immediate management for this species, and that the measures from the FMP including closed seasons for trawlers have been pushed until more data is gathered. However, we welcome the introduction of greater monitoring and data collection, as well as the Voluntary CoC and ID cards.
We will continue to analyse this plan and hope to see it deliver sustainable populations for cuttlefish.

CCI were excited to be invited to the Marine Citizen Science workshop in Plymouth last month! 🌊

The event was organised by and packed with insightful discussion exploring how we can make UK marine citizen science more impactful — from improving data quality to increasing participation in projects. 📊

After the talks, we all took to the sunny rocky shore to try our hand at eDNA sampling, with results feeding into a wider Natural England project. 👩🏻‍🔬

Great discussions, brilliant people, and lots of inspiration for the future of cuttlefish conservation and Project Sepia! 🐙

Thanks for sharing Plymouth Sound National Marine Park!

A Common Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) taking a swim around the National Marine Park. Like octopuses and squid, Cuttlefish have strong, razor-sharp beaks that make light work of crabs, fish and even smaller cuttlefish!

Cuttlefish Conservation Initiative - CCI run Project Sepia, which is a way to monitor cuttlefish populations and locations. If you find any cuttlefish during your swim, be sure to fill in their cuttlefish data logging form which can be found on their website🌊
