Saltram is still a largely undiscovered treasure, and the result of centuries of sophistication and extravagance just waiting for you to discover! The perfect family day out: close to Plymouth and yet in a world of its own. Home to the Parker family for nearly 300 years, the house with its original contents provides a fascinating insight into country-estate life throughout the centuries. Fine Robert Adam interiors and beautiful collections bring the 'age of elegance' to life at Saltram. Learn about some of the fascinating characters and family stories, including the correspondence between Frances, the first Countess, and Jane Austen. Surrounding the house is a beautiful 20+ acre garden, in which there are many plants of interest year round as well as historic statuary, follies and an orangery. The garden has excellent accessibility all year round and the many pathways that weave through the myriad of plants, from stunning large trees to herbaceous borders, provide sights and smells to capture the imagination of all ages.

🌱 Something new is taking root at Saltram East.
To help prepare for this winter's Community Forest tree planting, Saltram East and its access paths will be temporarily closed from 2-6 November. This essential work will pave the way for 12,300 new trees, creating more space for nature and people to thrive.
Thank you for your understanding while we prepare for this exciting next step.

As the veil grows thinner this Halloween, a spookily good carving of Saltram House is sure to keep the evil spirits at bay.

Happy haunting ghouls and ghosts!

Have you ever come across mysterious magic markings in an old house?

Historic graffiti like this example at can be found on the walls of many ancient buildings. People etched these 'witch marks' into the walls of their homes for protection against evil spirits and to bring good luck.

The most common is the daisy wheel, or hexfoil, a pattern with endless lines that were believed to confuse and entrap evil spirits.

In this case at Saltram, John and Theresa Parker were likely protecting the purity of the water stored in this 18th century lead water butt found in the original Tudor courtyard. The initial P is for the Parker family, and the date 1771 was just two years after their marriage and during the period that they transformed Saltram house into the Palladian Georgian mansion we see today.

This hidden piece of Saltram's history is not currently accessible to visitors, but plans are in place to open up the original Tudor courtyard of the building in summer 2027.

What does accessibility look like in a Grade I listed historic house?

I'm Mark Lane, and during a break from filming BBC Morning Live, I headed to Saltram House in Plymouth to find out more about an exciting project that will help make this remarkable place more accessible for wheelchair users and many other visitors.

It was inspiring to see how careful planning is helping to open up more of Saltram’s stories and spaces, while protecting everything that makes this historic house so special.

While the house will close temporarily for the access improvement works to take place, there's still so much to explore, from the stunning gardens to the fantastic new multi-use trails at Saltram East.

I’m excited to come back next year to see the transformation for myself.

Every portrait tells a story. Some take centuries to uncover.

This Black History Month, discover Jersey’s’ Story at Saltram. New research has revealed more about George Jersey, the boy depicted in Joshua Reynolds’ earliest-known depiction of a person of colour.

Born in Barbados, Jersey served on six Royal Navy ships before the age of 29 with Plymothian Lieutenant Ourry, who is also featured in the picture.

Visit the exhibition at Saltram before it closes on 1 November and discover the story behind the portrait.
