Congratulations to John Jenkins, retired volunteer from Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Weymouth. John received his papal blessing for 25+ years of dedicated service volunteering for CAFOD.

John commented: Having witnessed reports of poverty and disaster in many parts of the World my wife Christine and I wanted to help in a small way. Already knowing of the world-wide work of CAFOD especially in the field of Development joining with the Catholic Church we decided to support that outreach. Thanks to the generosity of the Weymouth priest’s parishes and hard work of volunteers we did our best to help.

Last month, on 3 July, we celebrated the life of Bernard White at his funeral Mass. It was a beautiful and fitting tribute to a man who dedicated many years to supporting CAFOD's campaigns across the Plymouth Diocese.

Here are some photos of Bernard during his years of campaigning, including a special moment when his daughter, Katy, received his Papal Blessing in recognition of his outstanding service as a CAFOD volunteer.

Bernard was a tireless and much-valued volunteer in the Dorset Deanery and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

As we celebrate A Million Acts of Hope week, we mark our churches as places of Hope and Welcome using our new Caritas Diocese of Plymouth posters and banners. Look out for one of these at your local church and let us know where you have spotted them. Here Canon John Deeny in Launceston gets his ready for the first parishioners who will see them at this evenings Ascension Mass.

HOPE HAPPENS HERE
This week from the 13th - 20th May we have invited all of our churches to stand in solidarity with A Million Acts of Hope campaign. This national initiative celebrates the everyday acts of kindness, care and connection happening across the UK. Shining a light on the everyday acts of hope and the people and communities that make them happen. Caritas Diocese of Plymouth has designed a Welcome banner utilising the 75 languages that have been identified in each of our parish communities. Each church this week will display a poster version of the banner, and we invite you to take a look and see how many languages you can recognise. We know that our congregations are a great witness of Welcome and belonging to all. Look out for future banners and flags displayed outside your churches to show the local community that, no matter what your background, you are welcome to come and join in with all of parish life. millionactsofhope.org
