Caring for trees in the hands of the next generation 🌱

Catherine, our Discovery, Learning and Engagement Officer, took a group of pupils from Kirkmichael Primary School out to visit Dalreoch Farm near Blairgowrie.

Part of PKCT’s A Tree for Every Child initiative, they’ll be back again in November to plant over 100 native trees from the Woodland Trust at this site.

In the meantime, Paul who lives on the land, has pigs working hard to prepare the soil for planting by turning over the soil as they root around with their snouts!

A Tree For Every Child is now in its fifth year, reaching over 20 schools and over 1000 children – and over 3,300 trees have been planted.

The latest update on the Comrie towards Baird’s Monument Active Travel Project has been released 🥾

This is part of efforts to deliver better provision for safer walking, cycling and wheeling routes in the area, which has been a long-held aspiration of local communities.

Cycling and walking charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust has funded the design of the various phases of this project via the National Cycle Network (NCN) fund through Transport Scotland. Perth and Kinross Council has secured additional WWCT funding to contract Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust and TP&E (Transport Planning and Engineering) to deliver the design work for the Comrie to Baird’s Monument section.

One of the stops on Bid's walk around the Cateran Trail was to a small pond just outside Kirkmichael, where we got to have a look at some incredible Damselfly nymphs.

This pond is home to the endangered and rare Northern damselfly. Unlike dragonflies, they are weak flyers, so with landscapes drying up through drought, they are losing their habitats and unable to find new ones easily.

They are generally confined to the North East of Scotland, so we're very lucky to have them in Perth and Kinross 💚

Day two on the Cateran Trail for Bid!

She walked from Kirkmichael to the Spital of Glenshee, via some amazing biodiverse landscapes and farmland, and including a stop at Dalreoch Farm meeting some pigs who are helping clear ground for tree planting with Kirkmichael primary later in the year as part of our A Tree For Every Child project!

Bid walks the Cateran Trail - day 3!

We had a very drizzly start, cheered up by meeting Fiona and Ian who live near Glenshee and who have worked for PKCT to restore drystone walls along the trail.

The sun came out in the late morning as Bid made her way past Auchintaple Loch and down to finish at Kirkton of Glenisla!

We welcomed 10 members of the Perth Savills team recently, where they helped us with a volunteer task at Kinnoull Hill helping to remove broom and other plants, in order to support the heather regeneration.

We also started to form scrapes of soil, ready for the sowing of new heather seeds 🌱

The team have been working with Catherine, our Discovery, Learning and Engagement Officer to learn more about the work of PKCT and to help the environment in their local area.

The task was co-ordinated and led by Chris from the PKC Greenspace team and this was many of the group’s first experience of practical outdoor volunteering, and they had a great time - a huge well done and thanks to everyone!
