As Autumn starts, it’s a good time to reflect on a busy Summer for the Team:
Incident 29, 28 July: The team was called to search for a vulnerable missing person in Exeter, who was subsequently located. (13 members, 3 1/4 hours)
Incident 30, 30 July: The team was alerted at 16:33 to a member of a walking group who had collapsed North of Sittaford Tor. 11 members deployed to the site and owing to the extremely dry conditions it was possible to drive team land rovers right to the top of Sittaford Tor, and convey them to a waiting South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust vehicle in Fernworthy forest. (2 1/4 hours)
Incident 31, 13 August: The team was requested at 0349 to assist recovering an unwell person from Cullever Steps to an ambulance. (8 members, 1 1/4 hours)
Incident 32, 19 August: As the fine weather broke, the team was called at 05:18 to a hypothermic casualty, once again North of Sittaford Tor. In spite of the conditions, it was still possible to reach the top of the tor with team land rovers, so the casualty was warmed up and transported to meet family members. (12 members, 2 1/2 hours)
Incident 33, 24 August: The team were tasked at 15:13 to a walker with a significant lower leg injury near Vellake Corner, above Meldon Reservoir. 13 Team members responded and the casualty was treated by team Remote Rescue Medical Technicians, a SWAST community first responder, and a Devon doctor. The remote location meant that the casualty needed to be splinted, then carried by stretcher all the way to Meldon Reservoir car park to meet an ambulance. (13 Members, 3 1/2 hours)
Incident 34, 31 August: The team was mobilised at 16:08 to a 15 year old casualty with reports of significant medical issues at the top of Steeperton Tor. 19 members deployed to the scene, stabilised the casualty and then extracted by stretcher and land rover to a waiting ambulance at the Sandpits car park. (3 1/2 hours).
2026 looks set to be another busy year. We hadn't deployed to Sittaford Tor for a long time and we know these things come in threes so ... stay safe everyone!

Five years on: The local community and North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team return to Belstone Tor to celebrate Gilby Taylor’s inspiring legacy

Saturday 5 September 2026 | Belstone, Dartmoor

Five years after one of Dartmoor’s most uplifting community achievements. Friends, family, volunteers and members of North Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team (‘NDSART’) will return to Belstone Tor to celebrate the life, joy and lasting legacy of Gilbert Taylor (‘Gilby’).

In September 2021, NDSART volunteers joined forces with Gilby, his wife Jane, and a huge circle of friends and local supporters to help him fulfil his dream of standing once again on the summit of Belstone Tor. Living with multiple sclerosis, Gilby was carried to the top of the iconic landmark. An extraordinary moment of determination, teamwork and community spirit that allowed him and Jane to revisit the views they had treasured as keen hillwalkers.

The challenge captured hearts across Devon and beyond, receiving widespread media coverage and raising approximately £10,000 for the search and rescue team. It became a shining example of what a community can achieve when it comes together.

Gilby sadly passed away in August 2025, but the Belstone Tor Challenge remained one of the happiest and most meaningful experiences of his later life, an achievement he celebrated often and with great pride.

To mark the fifth anniversary of that joyful day, NDSART, Gilby’s widow Jane Taylor, local residents and members of the original support team will gather in Belstone on Saturday, 5 September 2026 to retrace the route, reconnect as a community, and celebrate the positive impact the challenge had on Gilby, his family and everyone involved.
