Sea Cadets - South West Area Adventure Training

Late March weekend 5 of training fell upon us and saw us operating from a new location at Wilsworthy Camp. An early start for all with kit checks before breakfast, first cadets left at 0800 for a long day across the moors. Cadets camped at Riddon Ridge and had an early evening surprise a "night navex" to practice navigation in poor visabilty. All went well then back to the tents for a well earned rest. Up early Sunday the route featured blind legs, cadets only got given the next check point as they reached each point, this left uncertainty on how far they would be walking that day a test of committment and endurance. Well done to all.

Weekend 4 - mixed bag of weather over the weekend with cadets tackling some very wet and boggy terrain on the Saturday, Sunday focused on theory work involving emergency proceedures, kit and equipment checks and first aid.

As we enter the first training period of 2026, I would like to thank the South West Area Adventure Training Team for all their hard work in 2025. Preperations are now complete for weekend 3 of TTC26. We look forward to meeting all cadets on Friday for a weekend of development and personal discovery. The route is set, plans are afoot and the weather is looking to be wet but favourable!

Another successful weekend as the 10 Tors 2026 journey continues 43 cadets joined staff at Okehampton on Friday evening to move forward on both team and personal journeys. This weekend saw an increase in weight carried and distance walked on the Saturday, Sundays evolution saw cadets being remotely supervised from checkpoints, smaller groups navigated around an 8km route independently with great success. Go team Ten Tors!

Well another good weekend at SCTC Weymouth, 7 staff members undertook the MIAS Level 1 Training, the weather held off and a good weekend was had by all, now to practice and hone those skills ready for assessment in The new year!

Southwest Adventure Training team are all set for another weekend expanding opportunities for cadets! Staff from across the Southwest will converge on SCTC Weymouth tonight for the first weekend of training to become Mountain Bike Level 1 Instructors (MIAS). The weekend will focus on individual skills, group management and bike maintenance imparting the knowledge for their assessment early next year.

Well, weekend 1 TTC26 completed! 48 cadets with varying ability attended a gloomy wet and overcast Okehampton Camp late Friday night. An early start Saturday with breakfast before classroom work in the morning followed by a 12-14km introduction to navigation on Dartmoor. Sunday saw cadets venture out into the gloomy mist for further training on routes cadets chose and planned themselves the night before. All Cadets engaged well throughout and are now on their own personal and team journeys, all look forward to returning in December for round 2. As always big thanks to the TTC26 training team without their support and experience this would not be possible. 😀

Ten Tors Training 2026!

As the first training weekend nears, final preparations by the team continue. We have 50+ cadets from south west area taking part in the first weekend. We aim to train teams in all 3 distances 35, 45 and 55 mile events. This allows cadets to face new challenges and gain important life skills whilst having fun. Letters have gone out, google classroom is now live. Let the challenge begin!

Thats a wrap on yet another fantastic weekend Hillwalking on Dartmoor, great to see new cadets attending and hearing their positive comments and how they will be attending future events. A big thankyou to all staff who attended this weekend without their support it would not be possible. Now to concentrate on our future 10 Tors 2026 event watch this space for updates!
