West Devon CVS Supporting, developing & promoting community & voluntary action in West Devon Reg. Charity No.1119730

14/06/2026

This week we'll be celebrating , supporting our diverse local community in understanding the variety of experiences of refugees and asylum seekers and learning how to show support in their everyday lives! ๐Ÿงก

The theme for this year is โ€œCourageโ€, highlighting the bravery refugees demonstrate in rebuilding their lives, navigating new environments, and contributing to society.

As a community we can celebrate the resilience, creativity, and contributions of refugees, encourage others to show support and create inclusive, welcoming environments for our local refugee communities.

This Refugee Week also marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, which defines refugee rights and international protections.

This coming Thursday! A welcoming peer support group...

This group is for people who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, as well as families and friends who offer support too. Our group provides a safe space to share experiences, access practical advice from those who truly get it and build lasting friendships.

Together we can reduce isolation, promote confidence and improve quality of life for everyone affected by cancer in West Devon.

Everyone is welcome!

Letโ€™s help to build carer friendly communities! ๐Ÿคฉ

Carer friendly communities are places, spaces, services and community groups where unpaid carers are recognised, understood, and valued. They make support part of everyday life ensuring carers get the opportunities and help they need. ๐Ÿงก

They are made up of people who:
Recognise unpaid carers and the vital role they play
Understand the realities and impact of caring
Take action to identify and support carers in practical ways
Empower carers to live fulfilling lives

When communities work together in this way, carers have fairer opportunities and can lead better lives. No matter the size of your community or how you connect, there are practical and meaningful steps you can take to make your community more carer friendly. ๐Ÿงก

This yearโ€™s campaign, is focusing on building carer friendly communities - calling for better recognition and support for unpaid carers.

There are 5.8 million people in the UK caring for a family member, friend or neighbour who is ill, older or disabled and many find the impact of caring on their health, finances and employment opportunities a challenge.

Unpaid carers save the UK economy an estimated ยฃ184 billion each year โ€“ the equivalent of a second NHS โ€“ but not everyone gets the support they need. Carers UK research shows that more than half (57%) of carers feel overwhelmed โ€˜oftenโ€™ or โ€˜alwaysโ€™.

A carer friendly community is a place, space or organisation that values carers and does something practical to support them by identifying carers, listening and responding to their experiences so that they are not left to cope alone.
This includes the workplace, local communities, faith communities, GP practices, hospitals, local NHS neighbourhoods, pharmacies, schools, colleges and universities, businesses or online communities supporting unpaid carers.
