In August 1944, Private Margaret Hicks of the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service), from Sparkbrook, Birmingham, a member of a mixed anti-aircraft battery on the South Coast, paints another V-1 'kill' on the battery scoreboard.

At 18 years old, Private Hicks is the youngest member of her battery, and formerly worked as a shop assistant.

The V-1 flying bomb (nicknamed "doodle bug" in Britain) was the first of the Vergeltungswaffen (V-weapons) deployed for the terror bombing of London during .

The Wehrmacht first launched the V-1s against London on 13 June 1944, one week after (and prompted by) the successful Allied landings in France.

At peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at southeast England (9,521 in total) decreasing in number as sites were overrun until October 1944, when the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by Allied forces.

On 9 August 1944, men of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) are pictured moving up during the fighting south of Mont Pincon, Normandy. Heavy mortar fire greeted their advance, as they pushed forward with the tanks along the high ground.

Writing after the end of , Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery said, "Of all the infantry regiments in the British Army, the DLI was one most closely associated with myself during the war. The DLI Brigade [151st Brigade] fought under my command from Alamein to Germany... It is a magnificent regiment. Steady as a rock in battle and absolutely reliable on all occasions. The fighting men of Durham are splendid soldiers; they excel in the hard-fought battle and they always stick it out to the end; they have gained their objectives and held their positions even when all their officers have been killed and condition were almost unendurable."
